weak heart?

I have sinsus tachycardia. I have been diagonsed for three years and on Toprol xl.

Questions:
1. Do I have a weak heart?

2. Can a genetic nerve disease in my family be the reason I have this?

3. I exercise three times a week, but recently am suffering for small, but frequent palpitations. Am I doing something wrong?

Lastly, Should I be worried about the veins and arties of my heart?

What type of exercise are you doing?  Perhaps you are maintaining your exercise at too high a heart rate.  How is your weight?  I would think exercise is good for your heart rate.  But, at a reasonable intensity.  Is your heart in good structural shape?  Low intensity aerobic exercise I would think would be okay.  I have inappropriate sinus tachycardia and am on 25 mg atenolol.  I exercise and recently I have experienced some heart palpitations I think.  I was trying to lower the dosage, as my blood pressure was dropping.  After a few days on slightly decreased dosage, I had some palpitations.  Dr. told me to keep working out, as I was not having chest pain or other symptoms.  Exercise has helped control my blood pressure.  I have been taking atenolol for about 15 months.  I am 44 yo, 5'8" 183 lbs.  I am trying to lose some weight.  Was 202 lbs at one time.   May try a second opinion.  I got two opinions on my heart.  They both turned out to be pretty much the same, however, newer doc told me I could lift light weights.  Hope every thing works out.

You said: "...heart rate is still in the hundreds." May I take that to mean over 200?  That is a very high rate, and I'd think even at an age of 29 is too high even for an exercise HR maximum.

I'm not of much help, but reading along you statement about "hundreds" raise my question.

I was 29 and he felt I was too young and did a doppler of my heart. Normal size. I am not sure which is elevated but I watch my potassium a lot. He doe not want my doing areobic exercise or get my heart rate elvevated becuase it is already. Even with my beta blocker, my heart rate is still in the hundreds. I am not on a higher dose because my body can't tolerate a higher dose.

He thinks it is the sympathic nerve or vasal nerve that is behind some of my problems. I also have two different irregular heart beats. I am not sure if that is a reason fore any of it, but I was born with the irregular beats.

I not sure that there would be a connection with a genetic neuropathy in relation to your symptoms.

I am a bit confused about your cardiologist thinking process. He refuses to do a stress test but tells you to be careful with exercise? If he thinks you should be careful then he should be doing a stress test to rule out any problems. It is true that in order for our hearts to stay healthy, 30 minutes a day of cardiovascular exercise is good. Of course, it needs to be approved by your Dr if you've been told to be careful.

Maybe it's time for you to seek a new Dr if you feel that you are not receiving the proper care. You mention that your electrolytes are elevated...which ones are high (Potassium, Calcium, Magnesium)?

There is a genetic neuropy. That is all I know about that. I have had numerous EKG's. My cardiolost refuses to do a stress test because of my age.I am a type 2 diabetic non-smoker or drinker. I have been off of caffeine for over five years. I used to have low blood pressure until I turned 30. I have been anemic since I was 16. My thyroid has been tested and so has my electrolytes. Thyroid is normal and my electrolytes are elevated.Hope this helps.

A friend feels that if I exercose more that it would strengthen my heart, but the cardiologist says to be careful.

Hello...

You could be experiencing Sinus Tach for many different reasons. It doesn't neccessarily mean you have a weak heart. Have you had any kind of lab work for thyroid levels, electrolyte levels?

Regarding genetic nerve disease, what type of disease runs in your family? Have you been tested for the disease?

Naturally your heart rate increases with exercise, this would be an appropriate sinus tachycardia. It doesn't mean you're doing something wrong.

What are your risk factors for heart disease? Age, history, do you smoke, high cholesterol, high blood pressure etc?

Have you had any stress testing or echocardiogram?
