Ayurvedic medicine is traditional indian medicine.  Phyllanthus plants like amarus, niruri, urinaria have been given to Indians to treat multiple ailments, so they have a reputation there.

The thing with supplements is that they are made up from many different components, that researchers haven't yet isolated what specific compound is doing what.  For examle, it seems ellagic acid is the main component in phyllanthus plants for why these herbs have a reputation of helping people recover from HBV.

http://www.sciencedirect.com/science?_ob=ArticleURL&_udi=B6T2H-4GTWRTC-1&_user=10&_coverDate=09/30/2005&_rdoc=1&_fmt=high&_orig=search&_sort=d&_docanchor=&view=c&_searchStrId=1309516683&_rerunOrigin=google&_acct=C000050221&_version=1&_urlVersion=0&_userid=10&md5=dd55136a3bf6bc68425f9dd306f4693f

It apparently stops e-antigen from being secreted.  So would taking ellagic acid alone be better, or is there something in the rest of the phyllanthus plants that leads to recovery?  There needs to be more research.  Meanwhile it'll be left to self appointed guinea pigs.  There's lots of other components in these plants that may also be why phyllanthus seems to slowdown HBV.  Are they an additional benefit, necessary, or irrelevant?  This sort of research will probably not be done in time for many of us, since there's no money in it.
