How didn't I get Hep B from my partner?

My partner, 29 year old man, tested positive for Hepatitis B, the specialist thinks he is a chronic carrier (infected either from childhood or teenage years sexual contact (it's not from his mom or family members); the specialist said there's still a slight chance that it may be a new resolving infection from the past 6 months which will be confirmed with new set of results in February).

While the specialist said that his Hep B is not risky for the health and seems not be very infective now, I cannot help but wonder how I didn't get the virus when I've been with him for 5 years and have had unprotected sex on many occasions.

I just want to know why doctors don't promote this vaccine before you become sexual active. There's no advertisements like I see for the one for HIV. Isn't this disease just as serious? Why does that specific  test must be ordered to know? Why can't it be mandatory or just come with the test.. I just want to understand why..I don't want to die..

Hi faithhopegod, in most countries today Hep b is given to babies immediately after they're born to prevent any possibility of chronic carries cases. In my country this started in 2000 so many people born before didn't get the vaccination, unless they are in risk categories like people who work in the health sector or indeed people who have other STDs or men who have sex with men.

Thank you all so much for your comments. I hadn't had any vaccination before, but once he tested positive I started the vaccination process (need one last shot and will test for antibodies).

He is HbeAg negative and the specialist said not very infectious, but I wasn't sure if this can mean such a low risk so as not to catch it within 4 to 5 years.

HbeAg negative helps be less infectious, but even those with DNA undetected in blood can still transmit the virus, since they would still be HbsAg positive.  You are doing the right thing to get and check for full protection.

Similar to Ram, my husband didn't get HBV after us being together for 4-5 years.  He now has had the vaccination series and is protected.  My children also do not have HBV.  Those that are HbeAg negative with lower viral load are less infectious than someone that is HBeAg positive with high viral load.  Like Ram said, take vaccination series and then after complete test antibody titers, since you want to be sure you respond to vaccine to ensure protection.

He may be an inactive carrier. Chances of spreading to others is very less or no.My wife didnt get HBV although we are married 4 years ago. Now after i got to know that I am HBV positive, she is taking vaccination as she doesnt had antibodies. Please you go for vaccination.
