Need your opinion

This might sound very stupid and naïve. I am 53 years old. I know I have hepatitis b for sixteen years. But I really
don't know how I was infected nor does my mother have it also. Sadly I passed this virus to my children.
I was the extera child that my parents give away. I was reunited with my parents and siblings when I was eleven. I found out last week one of my sibling also have chronic hb. My question is did I passed this to my siblings. How do I found out if my mom and her siblins have it without they know. Is it prossoble daughter give to mother?

I have a good life even though I have hb. Thanks to my husband, children and many good friends. My children and I go to gastroenterology every six months. I know worry don't help but there are no monent that I don't think about my kids. I ignore my sister's behaver. I though she was at the age of PMS. But her attitude don't make since. I don't let her bother me. But when I found out from my nephew that they also have hb. That's a different story. All this years I thought in my family only my children and I have hb.  I dont' hush hush. I tell friends and family. My grandma die of liver cancer. She was ninety. But she had blood transfusion when she was sixty something. I don't remember why my mother was not tested. She never ask how am I doning and I don't bring it up again. Doing my other sister's granchild's party(not by the same mother). She hand me something to sterilize my hand before I can touch the baby. Why just me?  Even though my family know i have hb. It's not my responsibility to follow up if they get tested or not. They all adults.
I tell people that I got my hb from my mother. But I am not 100% sure. I think my uncle and aunt knows I had hb. But I don't know if they get tested or not.  Maybe they all think only can happen to me not them. (A woman that have many boyfriends when she was young that don't mean she sleep around. A person that sleep around don't mean that they can get chronic hb)
Someone in church told me that her friend's hepatitis is worst than mine.  She is already hepatitis c I am only on hepatitis b. I have to explane to her the difference between  Hepatitis a, b and c.

Great thread and posts.

"I don't think it is important to find out how you got infected, what is important is to find out WHO is infected so they can be treated".

I totally agree.  We can't change the what already happened, but we control how we move forward.

On the other hand, knowing how (and thus when) one was infected could be used positively, such as to educated, promote awareness, reduce guilt, and mend relationships in families.  Also it could also let you know the amount of years since infection, which could be useful in assessing certain risks and stage of the disease.

It is not the end of the world having hepatitis but it is dangerous to ignore it, how would you feel if someone died because they did not know they had it, my younger brothers died and it was because they were unaware they had HBV. All my family (except for one younger sister who refuses to be tested) are geting screened and monitored. I am currently on interferon therapy and due to finish in a few weeks time. If I was not been monitored my ALT levels would have gone undetected and I would not be receiving therapy at the moment. Sixteen years is a long time and it is risky telling people but do it and then at the end of the day you will feel relief because you told people to protect themselves. I noticed we are similar in age and I assume we are from similar cultures, My parents are both dead now but the attitude was do not tell the neighbours. Hush hush . Our mother got infected in a hospital having a transfusion in the late forties they did not know they were infecting the next generation and the transfusion would eventually kill her, however she lived into her seventies. Dino for what it is worth you need to see a Hepatologist if you are a carrier I think you get screened every six months and scaned one a year, it not a lot to keep yourself healthy. Tell your family when they start dying of HCC it might be to late to get treated. both my brothers were under 30 when they died. Maternal transmission is a crule way to get hepatitis and I initially use to tell people I know I have it but (I am not a drug user). Now I dont care who know. I am glad our mother did not know she infected us, we did not tell her as we as sibs decided it would be a burden to much for her to bear. Remember you may have infected your children but that was not your fault and you did not do it intentionally. I mean they did not discover Hepatitis B until 1961 (Bloomburg). The good news Dino is it is treatable and medicine has come on a long way. Attitudes are changing but only slowly. So you need to be the pioneer in your family. So even if it upsets the applecart tell them to get checked, at the end of the day you could save another life.

Thank you for your valuable opion. When I found out I was infected sixteen years ago. I know I infected my children. But my mother told me her doctor (herb doctor) told her to stay away from me. Because I am very contagious.  My sister said her whole family is fine and they all were immunize.  Now sixteen years later I found out her whole family is infected also.
I will call my cousins and tell them I have hbv and they should get tested also. If they decided to tell there parents that is up to them.

I am sorry to here you have Hepatitis B and also your cousin, there could be a family link, I myself was infected by my mother and she died of HCC not knowing she infected her whole family. I don't think it is important to find out how you got infected, what is important is to find out WHO is infected so they can be treated... Yes Hep B is treatable. Don't waste you life trying to find out how you got infected as this will not change the facts that you are infected. Get treatment for yourself and tell your family openly about your condition and that you are going to get treated. educate them about not geting screened. Not talking about it does not help anyone and if some has Hepatitis then they could die of IGNORANCE, I have buried three member of my family with HCC so get treated. Yes my family went through that don't tell anyone, we will be treated like lepars in the community, sush!. Please, Please go see a doctor and look after yourself. Staying quiet and ignoring Hepatitis could be very dangerous. Millions of people worldwide have hepatitis and the more people speak out about it the easier it will be for those who come after us. My Husband and daughter are innoculated against Hepatitis B.  The first thing I told my husband is get innoculated against Hep B if you want to go out with me!!!!  He was educated and understood and I think it made us stronger as a couple as we had honesty to begin with. I wish you lots of good luck and keep chatting we help each other here.

You are right. I think is important info for me and my own children to know about family health history. Every single day for the last sixteen years I was wondering how I get this virus. My family doctor told me maybe when I was a child I got immunize from a dirty needle. But I never have my mother tested. I worry she might feel bad if she have hb and pass to me than to her grandchildren. I don't want to kill her.

I plan to e-mail this
http://www.liverfoundation.org/education/voices/1/  to my nephew and tell him to show his mother. Just think that's me but I don't know how I got hb.

"Question is, is it possible to found out If my mother and her siblings have HBV or not without them knowing."

Here's a outside possibility.  Educate your family on the importance of learning family health history.  For example, if grandpa died of heart disease, I want to know about it.  It's important info for me and my own children.  Many family do the opposite and don't talk about it.  Then ask for your mother permission to talk to her doctor.  If she agrees, have her sign a consent form for you to talk to her doctors and try to find out that way.  Like I said, it's an outside shot.

That's what I think not impossible, highly unlikely.

*Question is, is it possible to found out If my mother and her siblings have HBV or not without them knowing.

The only way is to get her to do a blood test.

is it possible I am the one that give to my sister and mother.

Though not impossible, highly unlikely.

The problem is with your sister.  She needs to be educated about HBV.

Thank you for your comments.

cajim, I am not hatred toward who give me the HBV. My problem is five years ago my family fell apart. (This is with my parents and my siblings.) There are no family gathering. If I show up at my parents house no one wants to be there. Out of the blue my sister told me. I am cheap and worst that the dirt on the ground. She doesn't want to see me or hear my name. My mother told me  my sister change a lot. Why she hate you and your father? I guess my father is on her hate list too.( Mom told us dad cheated on her long time ago.) Last week my nephew told me there whole family also HBV positive. Maybe she think either my father or me give the family HBV.

Zellyf, no my mother has not tested. She always complete that she have a flu but why no fever. She doens't like to take pills. She always get herb from chinatown.  She is 73.

The reason I want to know is I want to comfont my sister. Maybe is something that is from our grandma give to mother and give to us. But If my mother doesn't have it. I still want to know. I know if I say I am so sorry can't change the condition. But at least she can stop hating our father.

Everyone in my family is good people.  HBV can make people think crazy sometimes.

*Question is, is it possible to found out If my mother and her siblings have HBV or not without them knowing.

About did I passed the virus to my mom or my sister. According to my doctor from UCSF he said " no way"  but my mother told me you can get STD from doing laundrey.     I just want to know from a patient to patient is it possible I am the one that give to my sister and mother.

God bless!

Why do you need to know who gave HBV to whom?  It would not help your current condition and may only add guilt or hatred. It may be best to let the unknown be unknown.
