Start viread or not?

My wife is 23 weeks pregnant and her lab results are as follows:

HBV DNA,QN, PCR  (IU/mL) ==== 12421 IU/ml

HBV DNA,QN, PCR (copies/mL) ==== 72290 copies/mL

She went to see a specialist and she was given prescription for Viread.  She is worried about taking it now. Should she start the Viread after delivery or now?

Thanks

I am also a chronic carrier. I just had a baby. He is now 4 months. I was in a state when I was pregnant too. I did not take any antiviral drugs despite my hepatologist prescribed a drug for me but it was Lamivudine which is not advisable to take. My Gyn said no to drug when I asked him. So there is no coordination between them to monitor me and my baby duriing pregnancy so I decided not to take drug. That is my story. If you have good hepatologist and good gyn that work together, I would say I will take drug for the sake of the baby. My baby got hepabig and vaccine the day he was born but I still have to wait till he is 1 year to test him. It is very stressful.

There are now very clear guidelines regarding whether there is a need to treat, when and what drug to use. Viread is one of the drugs that can be used throughout pregnancy if it is necessary to treat, it is a class b drug. So discuss with your doctor if you have any concerns.
