Sorry I addressed the prior email to Lynn. It was meant for you, of course.

As Lynn asked in her posts, do you hepatic encephalopathy as a result of advanced liver disease?  If so, then your doctor may prescribe lactulose and Rifaxamin (aka Xifaxin) which is an antibiotic used specifically for the treatment of hepatic encephalopathy.  My husband is taking both and is now stable.
Here is a link to a clinical trial comparing the use of lactulose alone or in combination with Rifaximin (Xifaxin)
Conclusion:
Combination of lactulose plus rifaximin is more effective than lactulose alone in the treatment of overt HE.

Hope this is helpful to you as I know how difficult it is.
Best,
Nan

If you have decompensated cirrhosis, with elevated ammonia levels and hepatic encephalopathy I have see many patients say they have been prescribed Lactulose http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/meds/a682338.html

But you definitely need to have this conversation with your liver specialist .
Good luck

Are you seeing a Dr what does your Dr say? Do you have hepatitis c? Do you have cirrhosis? Are you decompensated? If you have decompensated cirrhosis are you seeing a Hepatologist or Gastroenterologist?
