if you got some wheigth double check for nash and steatosis, unhealthy diets, fats and so on can make liver as damaged as a viral hepatitis and usually higher ast is found in alcool or high fat proceed food diets
US should be able to check for steatosis, also being overweight makes ast/alt higher on most people
What is the range you lab says is normal for AST?
For my lab the normal range of values for AST (SGOT) is from 5 to 40 units per liter of serum (the liquid part of the blood).
According to the Cleveland Clinic - Acceptance is growing for using ALT levels less than 40 U/L in men and less than 31 U/L in women, and AST levels less than 37 U/L in men and less than 31 U/L in women, as normal thresholds.
Meaning your level is NORMAL.
You are worrying about nothing.
When the liver's hepatocytes are injured BOTH ALT and AST levels increase not just one enzyme.
AST:
AST is less liver specific than the ALT level. Elevations of the AST level may also be seen in acute muscle injury, cardiac or skeletal muscle. Lesser degrees of ALT level elevation may occasionally be seen in skeletal muscle injury or even after vigorous exercise.
Mild elevations of the AST level, less than two times the upper limit of normal, are common. In part, this is explained by how normal values are calculated; normal is defined as the mean of the distribution ± 2 standard deviations (SDs). By this definition, 2.5% of normal persons have values above the normal range.
Cheers!

Seeing that normal AST is considered 15-37, I would not be concerned with it being 38.
My doctor explained that the numbers are not exact anyway.
If I were concerned I'd have them checked again sometime soon.
