Amonia and Pain Pump

I have a good friend who is in stage 4 liver failure. He is also on a internal pain pump which dispenses morphine for the original malady of chronic pain. He is really out of it. Like he has dementia. We dont know what to do. He is too weak for interferon and will probably need a liver sooner or later. Does anyone have any experience with this sort of thing or know what I am talking about.

      Lactulose (aka Enulose) is also prescribed for opioid catalyzed constipation. Anyone taking chronic opioids, e.g. Morphine, really must be on prophylactic stool softener/laxatives so adding Lactulose in this case would have a double indication (opioid induced constipation ammonia induced neuro-cognitive changes). d

my brother has end stage cancer orginated in the live and has live failure and the md is not draing the stomach any more due to risk for infection how long will he live like this

esld can cause increased amonia levels in the blood this could be the cause of the mental confusion also high doses of morphine can cause mental confusion . one way to tell get the blood amonia levels checked if the amonia levels are high the drug you need is lactulose this will decrease the amonia levels your friend would need a prescription from the md to get this med  hope i was some help
