Can I take Tylenol while on Treatment?

Hi, I'm a newbie.  Not sure what the protocol is here and I'm still trying to figure out the symbols (for example, 14/48???).  I am female, genotype 1, 48 years old and just finished my second full week of treatment.  Had 3 shots so far.  I was diagnosed from a routine blood test in which my liver enzymes came back slightly high.  After 3 repeats, they sent me for the Hep test and liver biopsy.  I was fortunate that my viral load was 600,000 and only slight inflammation of my liver, no damage.  I am a single mom and used to having to keep on plugging along through aches and pains, etc.  I seem to be tolerating treatment well most days. The day after my first shot, I felt like I had been run over by a Mack truck.  Even my hair hurt!  The past few days I have been living off crackers and gingerale.  I don't actually get sick, just feel queasy.  Even before treatment, I always had pain in my neck and shoulders, but today I woke up with the worst headache.  I was wondering if I could take Tylenol or something for it.  Does anyone know? Doctor's office is closed today.  Thank you in advance.  I am so glad I found this forum and wish you all well!

Thank you for your responses.  I didn't put two and two together, but after reading Rangle's reply about water, I realized I do feel better when I drink a lot of water!  Thanks again for taking the time to reply.  Best of luck!  Now I'm going to go study those acronyms so I can figure out what they are!  xo, Alysmom

If you look at the lower right side of this page there is something called Most Viewed Health Pages.  Common Hep C Acronyms lists all the abbreviations used here.  Makes for less confusing reading :-)

Ditto on the tylenol advice.  But I have been waking up with a pretty severe headache all week-and am thinking it may be allergy related.  For me in addition to the tylenol, I am using Ocean Saline solution for my sinuses.

Not only will it rinse away any bacteria, it will keep your sinuses moist.

The Riba really dries us out.  So just wanted to suggest that as well.  Drinking more water should help too.

Hope ya feel better :-) and good luck with tx!

Hello and welcome, you asked....... I'm still trying to figure out the symbols (for example, 14/48???).

I think it would be safe to say their on week 14 of 48. You wrote your on week 3 and as a geno 1 you would be 3/48.... Granted im just thinking here which is something i don't do to often:)

BTW, welcome and the advice you were given was great.

Welcome & good luck with the treatmnet.....

You may not be drinking enough water....Many people report less severe symptoms after increasing their water intake I put a gallon of water every day in plain site so I can see what I'm taking in ....a friend of mine had severe head aches in the beginning of tx
he increased his water intake & the headaches went away....it will also help with your skin....people here know their stuff JM is the man .....hi jm

Drinking a gallon of water a day is not that easy .....my eyeballs float sometimes

All the best

Tylenol is the pain killer of choice among many liver specialists, so there should be no problem with with prescribed dosages.

As to the rest, I empasize with how you feel, but you're going to have to something about getting some food down for a couple of reasons. First, this is a marathon treatment, not a sprint, and you will need food and calories to give you the strength to keep going. Many lose weight on treatment even with normal meals, but eating just soda and crackers can lead to very rapid weight loss.

The other thing is that the ribavirin works better (gets absorbed better) when taken with  a higher fat meal. So, if you can't eat a full meal now, at least try taking a couple of tablespoons of Peanut Butter or something fatty with the ribavirin. This may also help somewhat with the queasiness which is probably caused by the ribavirin. Good news is that riba-related queasiness/nausea is usually worse the first 12 weeks. Bad news it's really uncomfortable and for me one of the worst sfx of treatment. Sucking on ginger sometimes helps. If not, your doctor should be able to prescribe you something. Bottom line is that you really should make an effort to start getting food down even if you're not in the mood. Treat it like medicine. Many here report good results with "Health Shakes" with some added fat (peanut butter, whole yogurt, ice cream) thrown in.

welcome!!!! tylenol up to 2000 mg is fine; that's i think 4 pills of the reg. over the counter one; remember it's a marathon, not a sprint; if you letting yourself get sick, TX is going to be harder for you; take some pain med if you feel like it, in the long run, this works out better than feeling like ****; eat and drink whatever you feel like on TX; as long as it's not really unhealthy, like tequila......; but make sure you get lot's of fluids, and you shouldn't loose too much weight either; look at it as richard simmons program; you be fine.........just use meds to feel better rather then wait; good luck...

Welcome to the forum.  This is a great place for information and to connect with others that are having the same experiences you are.
Yes, you can take the prescribed dosage of Tylenol.  You have no damage and slight inflammation so you'll be fine.  People run into trouble when they take too high of a dosage or mix it with alcohol.  Of course, being on tx we know you are not consuming alcohol.  I am a stage 3 and take 2 extra strength Tylenol when needed. My doctor said Aleeve would be fine too, but I like Tylenol the best.  Good Luck with your treatment.
