Can anyone recommend a good Hepatologist in San Antonio?

Okay, so i looked up the Dr. "I thought" was going to be treating me but this is the extent of his Bio. I took out his name because even though he is not a Hepatologist he probably is a good Dr.

? M.D. is the fifteenth physician to join San Antonio’s premier team of gastroenterologists at Gastroenterology Consultants of San Antonio. He is fluent in Spanish and has called San Antonio home since beginning his residency here in 2002. Originally from Long Island, New York, Dr. ? became interested in medicine at a young age while watching his father in medical practice. It was the appeal of the intellectual challenge of diagnosis as well as the technical challenge of intervention that propelled him toward the field of gastroenterology.

Dr. ? is proficient in all areas of gastroenterology and has a special interest in diseases of the liver, having served as Assistant Clinical Professor in the Liver Transplant Division of University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.

He and his wife, Karla, are the proud parents of three children, including twins Kiran and Arianna, and big sister, Kiara. In his spare time, he enjoys playing tennis, travelling and going to live music venues with his wife.

Wow, this forum is so wonderful!! I feel so educated on what i might or will have to endure through treatment. I would of never thought of all of this and it has educated so much and probably has saved me SO MUCH TIME!

I would recommend them regardless of what stage you are in. I am stage 5 (of 6 ishak scale) cirrhotic. I had 3 prior attempt/failures over the last 3 yrs until this study. I was stage 2 three yrs ago prior to the first Tx. Once you are in their "system" they will do what they can to help you cure. I have finally reached UND for the first time ever. I know I am not out of the woods yet....but I am very grateful to Dr. lawitz and the staff :)

My husband had a colonoscopy at that place. I tried to see if one of the premier Gastros there treated HCV (in 2003 or 2005...I can't remember)  they made me feel ashamed and embarrassed. They did not treat Hepatitis C patients at that time. I noticed that doctor still practices there.

I too go to Alamo Medical Research. The first time I treated I saw Dr. Lawitz for every single visit. By the time I treated again the practiced increased in size tremendously & take up the whole block on Camden. One building is for research and the other is the digestive disease center.

During the last 48 weeks I only saw Dr. L once. I mainly saw my NP whom I respect and felt very comfortable with. I feel like I received excellent care they are very familiar with SOC for triple as well as the rescue meds. My only caveat is that it is unlikely you will see your doctor for every visit.

I would only recommend the place for stages 0, 1, 2 with no co-exisiting conditions or more advanced fibrosis. I say that since I my experience is limited to that. The few people I know with stage 3 and beyond have treated elsewhere.

jerialice and Margaret Dudley both sought treatment in SA and for different reasons opted to not treat yet. Hopefully they will chime in:

You might want to send a PM to Margaret Dudley. She really gets around and has met all kinds of people since she orchestrated the petition. She has been featured on KENS 5 news, the Express and does lots of networking:

The only Hepatologist I heard of in SA is Robert McFadden, MD. He did not accept my insurance and there were some other hassles so I was never able to see him. Not sure if he is still around though.

Do you have your biopsy results yet?

The absolute BEST in San Antonio, Tx is Dr Lawitz (Alamo Medical Research) 210-253-3426. I have been involved with AMR for 3.5 yrs now and just finished up a 12 week Gilead trial with them....finally going UND for the first time ever :) Good Luck!

Hepatologists are (generally) Gartroenterologists with a sub-specialty in diseases of the liver. The doctor you chose sounds like a Hepatologist to me.
