Cipro and the liver?

Has anybody been on Cipro for like a sinus infection and noticed that they feel worse as far as the liver goes?  I just finished up a 1 week dose of this stuff and taking the last one today made me feel lousy.  It had been making me feel bad since the the 2nd day, but this last day, has been the worst day on it.  Liver pain, abdominal pain in my left side, too and feeling slightly nauseated and just all the around more flu-like.  I ate some extra plain yogurt (acidophilus type) to try to calm down my stomach.  Hopefully, by tomorrow morning, since I haven't taken any since this morning (Fri.), I'll start feeling better.  I hate taking antibiotics.  About the only one that I can take that I can tolerate is the Z-Pack of Zithromax.

I have not had any more of the pains since being off the Cipro the past 2 days.  So, I have to surmise that it was the Cipro that my system did not like.  I would still take it again, if I had no choice because of an infection, but I don't like it.  I am allergic (deathly allergic) to Penicillin.  I had anaphyllactic shock from it and almost died.  I haven't ever even had some that bad even on my Hep C treatments.  In my PCN reaction, my lungs swelled up, my throat closed off, I fainted in the hallway, had hives, my eyes swelled out, it was bad.  My parents called the rescue squad and I was taken by ambulance to the hospital.  PCN is one drug I will avoid for the rest of my life.

Cipro is the only antibiotitc that has caused me stomach upset, but nothing liver specific.

In general: for people with liver problems drugs that interact with the P450-system have to be taken with caution. The following link is helpful, at least for physicians.

Antibiotics mess up my GI. Personally, I think we tend to be quick to relate anything to our livers and disease. I think antibiotics reek havoc for a large portion of the population. I start on doubledose of a good multi-culture probiotic before the first antibiotic pill and stay on till a week or so after course of tx. That helps alot.

I also recently had Cipro and I didn't feel the pain that you had. It was OK for me. I cannot take Bactrim (causes big rash). We do have to be very careful what other prescriptions we take and tell all doctors that we are on interferon/riba. Glad you are feeling better now. Have a great holiday.
