Thank you so much for your reply! Sorry my post was so broken up, I didn't want to type on and on yesterday, but I'm in the hospital for throwing up blood on Saturday night. I thought I had bleeding varices so I went right in- no messing around there! So I had an endoscopy yesterday and they have me Fentanyl and Versed. Results of the endoscopy were unremarkable! Today I'm thinking I probably kept nodding off and pressing send instead of it being my phone lol.
It's reassuring to hear from you that AFP that high isn't a guarantee of HCC. Especially the fact that it can ride when the liver is regenerating- if my doctors collegue was correct and the AFP was really done after Harvoni tx, that could be exactly what was happening. My symptoms from liver disease have improved and I feel so much better, more energy.
I think I will go with that theory unless something is found on the scans.
Thanks again and have a great day! I'll keep you all posted, maybe I can help someone else by posting the CT results.
Hi
AFP is only used as a possible indicator of HCC and it isn't all that accurate that is why it is done together with abdominal ultrasound. Abdominal ultrasound can visualize any possible tumors.
I have had cirrhosis F4 diagnosed by liver biopsy in Jan 2008. I have AFP and ultrasound every 6 months to monitor for HCC. I've never had a CT scan.
The question is what does your most recent imaging report and your doctor say.
I found some info about AFP testing
Not every person with increased AFP and AFP-L3% test results has cancer or will develop liver cancer. The AFP and AFP-L3% tests are not diagnostic; they are indicators. They must be used in conjunction with information from a history and physical examination as well as imaging studies to look for the development of tumors. Although these tests can provide useful information, they are not as specific or sensitive as doctors would wish. AFP can temporarily increase whenever the liver is injured and regenerating, and moderate elevations can be seen with a variety of conditions. Because of this, AFP testing can give some false positives.
Hope that helps
A CT scan the year before.
Anyway, told I was told by his collegue that my AFP was 136 in November, AFTER I treated. That scares me. Does anyone know of AFP that high and not liver cancer?
Ok, I was told that my last AFP from last year was slightly elevated. Due to that and the cirrhosis, My Dr wanted to get me a CT scan every year, and ultrasound yearly, so I would get imaging every 6 months. I wasn't alarmed because I knew if my AFP had been crazy high, mMy Dr would have been getting me
Did blood work. He called and said everything looked great, all negative. I trust my doctor implicitly, he's been with me for over 20 years. So next step was me coming back in 3 months for final PCR.
Actually, I made a mistake- I did not go for a follow up the, just got blood work. But my doctor did call, very pleased. Next step was me going to followup with NP. I went there in November, and was told that my last AFP test from pear before was slightly elevated and my Dr
Anyway, after an insurance battle, I got on Harvoni. Cleared by wk 4, LFT's went down to normal for then first time in 20 years. No more itchy skin or dark urine either! I went to my followup appt and my Dr.
