Has anyone here received disability due to HepC. I've done 2 rounds of Tx 26 weeks and 48. Not sure, waiting on labs but, I think I've relapsed.I surely can't do anymore interferon ( it kicked my butt severly). I don't think I'd be a viable candidate for any old drugs. I may have to wait for new stuff in the works. A few years or so. I am very fatiqued like I was when I found out I had Hep.
Listen to nygirl-I also posted the difficulty I had and like she said if you can work you'll get more money even if it's as a door greeter at Wal-Mart. Hep C alone is not enough-you have to have both feet in the grave and you can't fake it-they have their own doctors so you really have to be disabled.
You need to file for SSDI for some physical or mental condition not for just being hep c positive, you can win and your lawyer will get their 25% cut from your first check!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Depending on your toal income at the end of the year you may be taxed on SSDI.

No no no they won't give you disability just because you have the disease........in fact even with tons and tons of documentation from doctors it is STILL one of the hardest things to accomplish in the world. I had broken my back and had a dent in my brain (literally) - they turned me down for my back but the psychologist got it for me from the short term memory loss. Mostly I think he felt very bad for me and I showed up an hour early and when he asked why with my two little kids in tow I told him I was tired of getting lost all the time with the kids so I wanted to make sure I showed up for such an important thing. And it really doesn't pay jack either - having a job is a much better move if you can manage it at all (and having insurance!!!)
Imagine that all the fractured discs didn't get it but one kind doctor did.
Applying is such a LONG LONG thing most likely you'll be well over treatment and recovered but still not be able to work while you await getting any back pay. Who can live on that amount.......it's hard enough with a paycheck unless you really CANT work.

My SSDI appeal hearing is August 3. I applied for disability based on my amount of liver disease, hepatitis C and rheumatoid arthritis. I was turned down at the inittial phase and the reconsideration phase. I hired an attorney at the appeal phase. I'll let ya know how it goes.

Absolutely not! You've got to be up to your neck in the grave and who would want to try and live off of SS disability? We are all different and in varying stages. If you are too sick to work and your doctors tell you so and you worked all your life and paid into Social Security you deserve-earned those benefits. It isn't charity and it isn't the governments money. They, the government take it out of your pay checks for your own good LOL so if you can't work go for it-it's yours. Make sure you get an attorney though
so he can get his 33%!

I am a little confused by this post and the answers.

Does this include Stage 1,2,and 3?
(BTW I am 35 years HCV positive .now stage 2 .treated 30 weeks unsucessful)

You must get a lawyer...without question...to make it the fastest and easiest way possible. Check your state laws to see when short term disability and FMLA take place...in Texas you have to be employed for ONE YEAR to get FMLA...and they WILL fire your butt even with a doctors note.
The treatment sides are awful, but so is the SSDI review board and its doctors. It took me 2 years and couldn't work during that time. I had the HepC but Fibro/CFS/Depression, etc. too and it still took a while and I was turned down several times and appealed...but I first tried without a lawyer...bad idea.
You need to have docs write in their notes all of your physical and...most important...MENTAL ISSUES too!! Do NOT hold back on how you feel physically and mentally...it is VIP!!

I was a commercial fishing guide when I began Tx and I was 57 at the time and the sides got bad and my doctors had my drivers license and Captains license suspended because I had a grand mall seizure-never had one before or since. In Texas you have to be seizure free for one year. Anyway I applied for Social Security Disability and was denied, then I got an attorney and all my doctors said I could not work even if I wanted to. The Gov't sent me to their doctors and they agreed I could not work but again I was denied. We appealed and the third time was the charm and I got back payments. The Hep C did a number on my liver-I am F2-F4 for septal, bridging fibrosis and cirrhosis-a total of 87.9% but the ducts are still mostly open and my liver levels are holding steady although I am considered End Stage-have had ascites-tapped twice and esophageal varices (one major bleed) and portal hypertension between the liver and spleen. Thanks to Trinity JmJm I saw a Hepatologist and I am SVR-he did a sleep study and found I have sleep apnea so did another sleep study using Cpap-a miracle. The sides I thought were from the Tx are clearing up since I now sleep w Cpap and I am being weaned off anti-depressants anti anxiety meds now and I feel almost normal. Had it not been for finding this forum I would still be in a living hell. Seems sleep deprevation caused the chronic fatigue, which caused the depression and anxiety, which caused the aches and pains and flu like feelings. I intend to go back to work in a couple of weeks! I have had my drivers license back for some time but I seldom drove-I'd get so tired I was afraid I'd fall asleep. I opnly have to re-test to get my Captains license back-on paper. My new doctor and old doctors have all given the green light. I saw my Neurologist yesterday and asked him why he never thought of it and he just dropped his mouth open and said I never thought of it, I'm sorry. Anyway anyone who has sides 4 years after Tx might consider asking for a sleep study-can't hurt and I thank God for the new Hepatologist and this forum! franke566
You have to have lots and lots of paperwork and it takes some time but you could get lucky. If you really can't work it would at least be worth a try, a firefighter is a much more difficult job than most. I would think somehow a union would be able to help you through the goverment or town?

In RI ,just having hep C got me ssdi ,and free medical . of course I was denied first time. then after 6 months ,and a lawyer ,they spit it out . good luck
I was able to get SDI in California pretty easy. You have to wait a while for them to process the paper work but it was not to hard. My doctor filled out the form that I would not be able to perform my duties during TX and for some time after. Also FMLA kicks in to pick up some of the cost and it allows you to keep your benefits, Medical and such.
I ended taking reduced work hours because I felt worse if I stayed home alone getting all stiff in bed. I had reduced to 20 hours a week and had to take some days off when feeling really bad. The SDI covered my lost hours and days off without having to use much sick time. It was amazing and very helpful. I made more if I stayed at home because they don't tax it.I did find it was best to work a little to keep my mind stimulated and my body moving.

I received short term then long term disability through my employeer...or a little over 2 years during my therapy. It kicked my butt so badly i could not work...( i could literally do nothing for 48 wk round then 20wk round). It was not easy... a lot of paper work and phone calls but did eventually pay off. I understand how you feel... Hope everything works out for you. Really hoping you did not relapse also
now they are giving free herion to addicts in vancouver....its a trail study approved by govts
Ive heard of this one guy on TX...he was so bad the doc ordered him away from work with pay...only in canada ,,eh?
Some people almost die from TX...AND THERE are possible long term effects...even uncontrolled anger cna get you on a short term disable list...you are a danger to the public if you bite someones head off

I have had hep C for 35 years now and I do not consider myself the least bit disabled.
If I do reach the point where I am late Stage 4 and my liver disease is decompensated, I will probably change my mind but until that time I am just as capable and healthy as anyone else.

You can if you have company insurance...and in canada im pretty sure if you are unable to work..the govt pension plan has a disabilty option you can get...its takes 3 months to set it all up
