Food

Is anyone following a special diet or just watching and staying away from certain foods and beverages?  Obviously, alcohol is a no-no, but does anyone know if food is cooked in beer/wine is that something we should stay away from too - or is the alcohol "burned" off and it's ok??

also guys,

here's what my dad tells me from his research:

no yeast is a great thing.

try eating zero cooking oil, except olive oil.

also, don't eat red meat such as beef or lamb.  poultry n fish r good.  but dont eat too much proteins in general.

don't use cream or full cream milk.  use low fat milk.  goat milk and cheese is the best.

try to avoid butter as much as possible.

and, don't eat a lot of iron containing fruits such as apples.  eat grapes in moderation.

Don't forget about the sugar content of wines and alcohols.  After the cooking your left with a very high sugar content, so for those with blood sugar issues you want to watch out for that.

The amount of alcohol in cooking is small and I wouldn't think it was a problem but just so everyone knows it is a myth that the alcohol is burned off while cooking  some of it is but never all.

Here is a time breakdown as to how long it takes to "burn off" the alcohol and the percentages of alcohol left.

I have been hearing that a little bit of fat is good, esp before you take your poison....er...riba.

The Riba binds to fat so it is good to have some when taking it however you shouldn't change your diet drastically and eat a TON of fat or you WILL get fat! ;)

That is the reason I always take my Riba with food - at 7am with breakfast (a yogurt shake even helps) and with dinner at 6:30 or 7:00pm.

I lost 20 pounds because I couldn't really eat in the beginning of treatment and I didn't really HAVE it to lose - so I ate ice cream and such for calories but aside from that...I ate what I wanted, eating healthy and things that didn't hurt the mouth sores or my stomach.

I don't think there is any set regimen at all.

And yes, using minute portions of alcohol to cook with it does burn off and it's not like you are likely to be eating it all of the time anyway so don't sweat it.

Oh man I don't care - fried foods kill me too (and the doc advised not to have them anyway cause of it) but giving up fries? That is a physical impossibility as an American Im sure they would throw us out of the country if we even thought about it!  ;)

Why are all the gooooodest things in the world the worst for us?

LOL

Deb:
Haven't you heard FRENCH fries are as un-American as turbins these days - ha! If they want me to give up french fries they will have to pry them from my cold dead fingers and that is probably going to be the truth. How you doing girl. New job still doing well? Dale

Most of what I read suggest low fat and low protein.  High fat diets apparently accelerate the absorbtion of Riba in the body, making it less effective with increase sx's.

It would seem that the issue with protein part depends upon where your CBC is at.  If you have elevated protein, the less the better.  I also seem to recall that higher protein diets make the liver work harder.

But as we recently seen, apparently smoking does as well.

So, I guess I'll sit and ponder it some more as I'm dragging my fag taking a break from eating my steak.  But hey, as long as I'm washing it down with a fresh ground cup of joe, I should still be good to go.

I have a much more acidy stomache during tx. It has been really bad at times. I was taking Prilosec OTC, but am getting Nexium as the ins. will pay for it. What is awful is that once it's upset, it stays upset. Hate that!

I thought that fat with the riba was good? Is acelerating the process bad? Lately I am drinking Ensure in the morning w/ my meds. It seems to work well.

At times I find that whatever I can get down and/or keep down is GREAT! Do I wish I could eat a nice balanced fresh meal three or four times a day? Sure! It's not gonna happen, so I will eat my ice cream and whatever else pleases me. I know what good nutrition is, so I am not going to JUST eat junk, but sometimes it is too hard to force things down when they won't go on tx.

So Grandoak, I am with you. I will smoke my way down the stairs, holding on tight so I don't fall and eat big bowls of ice cream for breakfast if necessary to get me through the day. Sometimes that is all I can do.

But hey, I make SURE I drink TONS of water!

Not sure if alcohol is burned off in cooking. I wouldn't think it was a problem because of the small quantity used but I won't even use coff syrup right now I am so paranoid.

My doctor told me to eat anything I could during treatments and not worry about healthy eating. He said the more protien the better. I don't think real fatty things are good for the liver so I do watch that but I think its just important to try to maintain ones weight/strength.
