Good News for Veterans

Last week the Department of Veterans Affairs released a memorandum that any vet who wants treatment for HCV may be treated, no matter the stage of their disease. So happy to hear this fabulous news.

Every vet who receives their medical coverage from the VA will now be able to get treatment so that is still very good news for those treated by the VA as they previously were like many medical insurances denying treatment except for those who were F3 to F4

Just not a way to do an end run around your insurance provider if you have insurance that won't cover. Still there is hope that all insurances will come around at some point.

It is just crazy how some just people can just walk in and get a prescription just like for any other ailment and for those with other insurance you have to go to extreme means to fight for treatment. So sad and frustrating.

Totally bummed and annoyed that the memorandum they released made it sound like every vet could be treated. Not nice VA.

They will be providing meds for all vets under their care but I do not qualify to be under VA care.

I was thinking about another way for vets to get treatment if denied by their insurance. I have a co worker who is a vet but does not have liver damage so our insurance does not want to provide treatment. I was hoping he could check with the VA but because like me he is insured and has too high of an income he won't qualify.

Oh well it was worth thinking about as a plan B

I know you have already been cured. But, I am really sorry to hear this. Did you read the memorandum? It makes it sound like everyone will be able to treat. Do you think it is possible that since the memorandum was just released a week ago, that the website is not yet up-to-date? I am bummed.

P.S. My husband read that they will be using Harvoni.

I went to the VA website to try to enroll and apparently I am nor eligible as I have insurance and I am not a former POW or wounded disabled vet or served in certain military campaigns and I make too much money to qualify.

I guess you need to be either qualified through military disability or for my region make less than $50,710/year.

Apparently I don't qualify for VA medical even though I am an honorably discharged veteran.

I do not know the answers to your questions. But, it makes sense to me that they would be using Zepatier because it is priced so much lower.

It  says the Vet has to be treated at a VA facility.

I wish I wasn't so skeptical about this but after seeing first hand, via my husband, how the VA deals with some vets I'd like to know more about this. Are they actually paying for Harvoni ??

I see that it also states the prioritization protocol to determine eligibility for treatment is no longer in effect. I hope that means that any veteran is eligible.

Lynn, I don't know the answer to your question. The memorandum that was released on February 24th says "All veterans".  Here is the link:

Does the veteran have to be VA eligible? I am a veteran but not VA disabled status. I don't get any medical care through the VA. As far as I know I am not qualified to unless I am indigent. I am sure other veterans like me but who haven't been treated and cant get care from their insurance would like to know if they can qualify.
