I have been reading this forum 3 weeks and felt faily well educated about Hep C when I walked into the Gastroenteroligst office today. Not! He was not impressed with the information I had learned here nor, seemed overly concerned about my condition.
I had a blood test 4 weeks ago which revealed I have Hepatitis C with a viral load of 2,710,000 IU/mL and 6.43 LOGUI / ML. I made a comment to the doctor about my vl being high and he stated, " So he has seen alot of people with higer viral load."
I have read that people with thyroid conditions may have a difficult time with the interferon. When I mentioned my thyroid to him once again he said "So what"
Wow, this sure threw me off course with all the questions I was going to ask. He proceeded to tell me I needed to start on the interferon and it was only a 25 % it would work and it would give me flu like symptons. He handed me a box with brochures, water bottle, and a pill box. Quickly, he walked towards the door. I tried to ask questions but he informed me he would not answer any questions until I had read the information he gave me and to return in two weeks. At this point not sure if I want to return to him!
Too make matters worse I asked him was he going to do a biopsy and he said " Why, we both know you have liver damage and it does not matter what stage it is because theres nothing I can do about that." I suppose that may be true. He did tell me the only thing I can do to stop the liver damage is too stop drinking which I did 2 weeks ago. He also told me if I stop drinking I have a higher chance of dying from something else, unrelated to Hepatitis C. I found that comment very interesting.
At this point not sure what to do because time is ticking away and was looking forward to getting the treatment and getting it over with. Looking and waiting for a referral to another specialist could delay the process for months.
This may be a silly question but is this a pressing issue to rid my body of this virus or do I have time to look for another specialist?
Thanks for any advice you can give me.
Assuming you are hepatitis negative serologically, then statistically you are likely to have NASH or non-alcoholic hepatitis (assuming you do not drink to excess). I think your next round of testing should include an oral glucose tolerance test with fasting insulin levels to exclude diabetes mellitus and insulin resistance (that may also be associated with hyperlipidaemia and an elevated TSH). They should also exclude haemochromatosis with some iron studies, including a ferritin and TIBC, and check your uric acid. You need to have your blood pressure checked regularly and carefully, and you should have a hepatic ultrasound which will likely confirm fatty liver.
Best wishes,
Sonic
yes both ALT & LDL can come down with or even without meds, not sure about the tsh. i would get a hep panal blood test first. i would also not take any herbs, supplements, meds, ALCOHOL then take the blood test again to see if alt comes down. LDL has to do with your cholesterol and could come down with diet changes. good luck to you
Thanks a lot for the replies.
I got the blood results but I am seeing the DOC after 5 days. As indicated in the results, the ALT, LDL and TSH are higher than the normal range, I checked on the net, and high ALT is referred to mainly Liver faliure and Hepititus, that is why I mentioned about the vaccination.
Well I am not acholoic and not taken any drugs that may have affected the liver in recent past or even ever. You are right may be a good idea is to take some more tests to find out what is the problem. I need to see doctor urgently on this issue.
But can ALT and LDL come down to normal after medications, and if yes, whether a person genrally remians on medicaiton for life.
You have a low thyroid and need to see a doctor about that - it is no wonder you are obese. When the medications killed my thyroid I went that low and the doctor now has me right at 2.0 with the help of Synthroid. They do have medications that can help to make your thyroid work correctly - to replace what is needed. Have you any chance to go to an Endocronolist? He could give you advice that you need.
Something is killing cells in your liver - have you HAD a test for HepatitisC?
It is only a blood test for all of them and would be worth it.
Good luck.
first things first, having a high alt does not always mean hepatitis. did you have a hepatitis test? If you did what was the results? ALT can be raised by many things including alcohol, medications, etc. you said your doc wants to start treating this right away, did he say you have hepatitis? i would slow down and evaluate this whole situation. good luck
