ITP by nomenclature means "cause unknown." The condition of low platelets can be identified, but sometimes, what is causing the condition cannot be determined, hence "idiopathic."
Good questions, but your diagnosis suggests that no one, not even your doctors and specialists have yet to figure out the root cause of your thrombocytopenia. Wishing you best of luck. ~eureka
Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) is unrelated to HCV. It is a autoimmune disease having an abnormally low platelet count (thrombocytopenia) of unknown origin. It occurs in children as well as adults. Peak prevalence occurs in adults aged 20-50 years. Peak prevalence occurs in children aged 2-4 years. Approximately 40% of all patients are younger than 10 years. as adults.
Low platelet count (Thrombocytopenia) can be a side effect of HCV treatment drugs. Especially peg-interferon. Thrombocytopenia is also a complication of cirrhosis of the liver.
But because they both have low platelet counts in common doesn't mean they are related. They are two separate conditions that cause low platelet counts (Thrombocytopenia).
