This is an interesting discussion.  I too tested low for vitamin D in November and was dosed with 50,000 units once a week.  Retested Tuesday and still low, but not as much. Now I will take 50,000 units once a month.   The low of the range is 32 and I tested at 31.  The test in November was 19.  Truthfully, I thought it was just the new thing all the doctors were doing now, especially for women.  And I thought I was low because I work a desk and don't get out as much as I should.  I appreciate seeing the correlation here between liver damage and low vitamin D.

paen53 - good article.  I have printed it out for myself and for my internist.  He doesn't know much about Hep C  but I think he would like to see the correlation between Hep C and low vitamin D.

I also had my VL run in November since it had been a couple of years -- it was 2.85million IU/mL.

I had a Vit.D test run for the first time a couple months back and it also was low. I was given an Rx for Vit D 50,000 IU - one capsule per week for one month. This brought my levels up into the low normal range and I am now on 2000IU's (OTC) per day (split into 2 doses). I will have another test with my June labs and see where I am then. I was concerned at the time of that high of dose, but see by googling it, that it is a common dose to boost it up quickly. This is perhaps what your Dr. has in mind in mentioning an Rx.

Viaduk makes a good point about having adequate levels, especially during tx.

Vitamin D deficiency seems pretty common, especially with liver disease.  Mine was also low, and the doc told me to take a supplement.   I take 2000mg of vitamin D3 daily (not rx), and that seems to keep me at a good level.  I think that there are studies that indicate adequate levels of Vitamin D increases your odds of SVR.

Good luck!
