NAC (N-Acetyl-Cysteine) is a powerful anti-oxidant and can help prevent side effects caused by drug reactions and toxic chemicals, and helps break down mucus in the body. It appears to have benefits in treating some respiratory conditions, such as bronchitis and COPD. This is very crucial for the body’s life functions, as NAC helps the body neutralize toxins, heavy metals, such as mercury from dental amalgam fillings, cadmium and lead from paint and cigarette smoke. The Sulfhydryl balance has also been linked to enhance resistance to viral infections. NAC is one of the most effective oral chelating agents.
Taken regularly over a period of time, NAC will remove many toxic heavy metals from the body. NAC has been shown to be a protective agent in many diseases and conditions in which free radicals play a role. This includes cancer, AIDS, cirrhosis, as well as pollution damage from smoking or other chemicals.

If you are speaking of cirrhosis caused by hepatitis C, there are no studies that have been done on the use of supplements, vitamins, or anything else for that matter, and the regeneration of functional liver cells in cirrhotics.
If you think of the number of people that have cured their hepatitis C while having cirrhosis, the number is very, very small. Until the new treatments with antivirals came along last Summer, the odds of a patient curing their hepatitis C was very small. 10-15% at best. The degree of cirrhosis covers a very wide area. From those with fully functioning livers to those whose liver if displaying complications of End-Stage Liver Disease. There is a huge difference is the health of the liver in both of these groups although they are both classified as "cirrhosis". How many functioning hepatocytes there are in the liver that can regenerate healthy liver liver cells can very a lot. While the remaining healthy hepatocytes can regenerate, the scared tissue can never regenerate functioning liver cells.
What we do know is that there are a number of substances that are toxic to the liver that are so-called supplements. If a person ingests these and has an already damaged liver, obviously they can do more harm than good. The same applies to certain fat soluble vitamins.
Which supplements? What dosages? How often? Since supplements are unregulated there is no guarantee that what is on the label corresponds to what is inside the bottle. Of course this applies to vitamins as well.
As is all cases of cirrhosis, a patient should be under the care of a hepatologist and all changes including diet changes should be run through them first.
Don't some supplements aid the liver in this healing?
So in a word, No. There is no evidence that "supplements" will aid the liver in healing when it is cirrhotic.
hector
When the virus is no longer present, one still has cirrhosis. The liver then can work on healing itself. Don't some supplements aid the liver in this healing? I am speaking about after a successful TX.
Thanks
I see that you are in Indonesia near Jakarta. So you may have limited options available to you. I can only offer advice from being here in the US.
If you have cirrhosis of the liver due to hepatitis C, the only treatment that will stop the progression of your liver disease is hepatitis C treatment.
Please try to find a medical doctor that uses the latest Industrial World treatments. These drugs are expensive.
Unfortunately Laminine will do nothing to help your illness. The only way to prevent further scaring and damage to your liver is to stop the cause of your liver disease. Since you are writing to a Hepatitis C forum I assume you have been tested and know that you have hepatitis C. Perhaps the doctor that diagnosed that you are infected with hepatitis C could help you with treatment.
Or you could try Indonesia’s largest government hospital, the Jakarta-based Rumah Sakit Cipto Mangunkusumo (RSCM)
Diponegoro No.71 Jakarta Pusat Jakarta Pusat DKI Jakarta Telepon : 391 8301-11 Fax : 3134 8991 Denah RSCM
Don't waste your money on supplements that will do nothing to help your cirrhosis.
Good Luck.
