Looks like strep throat, antibiotics not working

Lot of people at work were sick for the last couple weeks.  I developed a sore throat and could see a white spot in the back of my throat.  When to my general practitioner who put me on 5 days z pack antibiotics (did not do a culture).  Finished z pack Saturday.  Still have white stuff in the back of my throat and feeling sore again.

Am a little worried about having to do too many antibiotics on tx.  Am worried maybe they are not as effective on tx.  Will try calling my gp and my hep doc tomorrow now that the holidays are over.

Just wondering if anyone has had similar issues or knowledge that could help.

I agree, could be thrush.  For thrush you need antifungal medication I think.

If test confirms bacterial infection resistant to ZPak, ask doc his opinion on the antibiotic Cipro. (But be nice about it. Doctors hate wise@ss patients who self-prescribe based on info gleaned on the internet;-)

+1 Thrush would be my guess also.  Hope you get this worked out with the Hepa quickly.

Hi suezeeque, never had thrush but that could be why the antibiotics did not work too.  Another item for the list of questions.  Thanks for your help.

My tongue has been sore for weeks and weeks.  So sore even toothpaste stings (a LOT).  Around week 11 or so I started to get white patches on it..

It hasn't gotten any better or worse so I'm just living with it.  The doctor attempted to get a swab but wasn't able to get 'anything' off it.

I got some Biotene toothpaste and it doesn't sting.

Aren't white spots on the throat thrush?  Antibiotics wouldn't do anything for that...

Flcyclist, thanks, wrote that down and will discuss with the doc.

Wllbb, will search under anc.  Had to have multiple meetings with folks complaining about sore throats at work so was prett sure he was right at the time.  Wish I had asked him to just check to be sure now.  Will definitely do so.

Thanks so much for the help.  Not fun being sick on top of feeling sick but hanging in there.

The thread I mentioned really didn't not pertain to a sore throat per se . It was more about taking Neupogen if ANC was low. However cyclist brings up a good point ,,often these mouth issues are not bacterial related .that is why I suggested he do the swab to rule it out..

Good luck

During a visit my doctor noticed some white patches on the back of my throat, but after watching for a week didn't get worse and need any trt.  The doctor  (treats alot of patients on chemo) said he would have used nystatin lozynges used for a period of 5 days.  Some on the forum have also talked about using Magic Mouthwash with nystatin with good results.  You might want to bring this up to your hepatologist tomorrow.  Good luck.

Thanks , will see if I can find the thread.  No on the anc, will see if I can get that too.  Hard to get the blood work info from my doc between appts.

Probably best  if  the doctor did a swab to ascertain if it  is indeed a bacterial  infection. No sense taking another course of antibiotics if it isn't .
There was a thread about this just recently...do you know what your ANC (absolute neutrophil count) is?
