My good friend always has low ast and alt levels.
She is positive for hep C with no liver damage at all.

My husband had it since it was still called non-A non-B and his liver enzymes were ALWAYS normal (he knew he had it because he was actuley ill when he got it).

Mine however when I found out with almost 300, in the high 200s.

Everyone is different.

I contracted Hep C between 30 to 35 years ago (1975 possibly from Gamma Glob., or at some point during my career in critical care , probably in 1982 after a major exposure).

My last known normal liver function tests were in 1999. That was the last time they were tested before 2009 when the ALT was slightly elevated. So I had it a long time before it started to alter any blood levels.

You can have normal liver function tests and still have HCV, that is my situation. I personally know a few couples where one has this and they have not been it passed on to their partner. I think it would be a good idea for him to be tested just to be sure.

Hi PJ: Someone can have normal liver function test results (e.g., Albumin, Bilirubin, AST/SGOT, ALT/SGPT) and still test positive for HCV. Liver function test results depend on many factor including the stage of the disease. SInce you are HCV positive, that is justification for your husband to get tested for the HCV antibodies -- and he should do this to help put your mind at ease. If he is positive for the antibodies, he should get an HCV viral load test (Quantitative PCR test). Cheers, GB
