O'Douls (sp?)

Does anyone know if it's safe to drink O'douls non-alcoholic beer?  I think each beer contains less than one-half of 1 percent alcohol by volume.
I quit drinking two years ago and I don't miss it but every every now and then I do miss the taste of a beer with a good steak or some sushi.

Any ideas?

Welcome. I have only been here a couple weeks myself, but I check the posts every day.  I was dx over 10 yrs ago.  I have geno 2b, vl 1.3 mil., and start tx on 6/17.
I wouldn't consider myself an alcoholic, but I used to swill beer on the weekends.  When I decided to tx, I cut way back to a beer or 2 on saturday and I will not drink during tx.
I think you might want to try not drinking for a week and see how you feel afterward.  You will likely feel a hell of a lot better than while drinking.
Remember that, if you do tx, you can drink while on tx.  Is this a good idea?  Probably not.
If nothing else, ry to get into the mindset that you are going to clear the virus and then you will be able to get back to kiiling yourself with booze.  By the tme you finish tx and hopefully clear, your attitude about this may have changed.
Not trying to be preachy here.  There will be many days this summer when I will wish I could be sitting in a boat drinking beer all day as oposed to shooting interferon.
I have a friend who quit drinking years ago b/c he would get violent when drinking.  His remedy was/is lots of coffee and pot.

I am also a recovering alcoholic...would love to talk with others doing the treatment.  I am into week 5 of the interferon and ribaviron..my dr. started me on ativan after i told him of chest pains, palpatation and shortness of breath and excruitiating headaches....and high iritability!!!  have others made it through this without having to take ativan or any other drugs that are a potential danger for us?
i've just found this site and it is very informative. I am grateful you are all here...it gets very lonesome at times....feeling like noone knows.....
thank you

you are a recovering alcoholic, great! i am sure you are not drinking while on Tx, it can lower your SVR chances.
I never heard of ativan for the symptoms you describe. Those are signs of anemia, which can trigger cardiac adverse events, get a cardiac consult soon. keep records of your blodd work and check how low the HGB is. I had those symptoms and when I complained, I was put on Procrit, not Ativan. question that choice.
other than that, welcome aboard!

Hey AK..... Look Out Alaska... Here I Come... I have only been trying to get there for a freakin year!!!!!!

I'm gonna be there in like 13 hours..... I arrive at 9:30 tonight your time....LoL (at least I got a direct non stop flight!

I have some pictures of my partner fishing on the Kenai last year... he took one of those little planes up into the high country.. when I get a chance & settle in, I'll repost them again. & he went on a weekend excursion of "Combat" Fishing somewhere last weekend.... Whatever fish that is running right now, the limit is 2 per day..... but up were they went you could suppossedly get 4..... but he got NONE... Ha!

Anyway, I know I am going to dinner somewhere in Eagle River /Ridege???? Whate-ever it's called Saturday night... & I have been invited to go out fishing on a boat, sometime when I am there..... I'll be going up to Fairbanks... & The North Pole.... & someplace called Denoli (sp)

He got robbed up at Eagle River.... so he just moved into some corporate housing somewhere in Anchorage... it's like a furnished condo or something, has 2 levels, 2 bedrooms, a garage, & a fireplace (not that I'll get to use a fireplace this time of year) but I'm excited!!!! Hope my health & Energy Holds Up!!!

P.S. Thanks for the Correction on those NA Beverages... I thought it was a higher content... but O'Douls... ugg that stuff is nasty.... but I have never liked the taste of beer anyways... so I am not a good judge on that!!!

Well... gotta hit the shower... I was out in the garden at the crack of dawn (In The Drizzeling Rain) weeding my garden one last time before I leave... Stayed up ALL NIGHT Cleaning House, since it's gonna become the local relative hotel while I am gone... LoL... (Didn't take my ambian & last night was shot night) & the house had BETTER look this good when I get back too! Figured the lack of sleep will help me adjust to the time differance... Don't know if I'll get used to all that daylight right now or not!!!

O'Doul's is bad. Buckler is better, Sharp's is OK, St. Pauli is probably about the best. The alcohol content is generally .25 percent, not 2.

You don't need a sushi bar here in Alaska, bonvivant, you just need to drive down to the Kenai and stock up on some fresh salmon. :-}
Getting to be that time of the year, too, reds start in the Russian in a week or 2.

It is definitely okay to drink the NAs. You would need to drink like 15 to equal the alcohol in one beer. Like others, though, I reco9mmend St. Pauli Girl, Clausthaler or even (when there's no other choice) the dark (amber?) O'Doul's as opposed to the regular.

I don't think I would take the chance.  My husband quit drinking 30 years ago, found out he had Hepatitis C and scaring of the liver in the early nineties.  About 4 or 5 yrs. ago he started drinking O'Douls quite often until the last few weeks.  He is having lots of trouble now and we haven't found out for sure, but we think his liver is about to cease working.  By the way, I have been reading some of the archives, and can anyone tell me what the stages are?  This is something I don't know anything about.  Thanks, Porgie

You mentioned Sushi.... YUMMY, Now I could LIVE Off Of That Everyday!!!!!

Humm, anybody know of a good shushi bar in Alaska???? Save me the trouble of finding one... Ha!

Many peaople confuse "Sushi" with "Sushimi".... Big Difference!!!

So Stay away from the "Sushimi" because that is where you get the raw & uncooked stuff, & raw SHELLFISH are what you have to be careful of (again depending on liver & active virus)

But you can eat the yellowtail, & maui maui...The Tuna Tatakki (sp) is marvelous.... Now if you are going to eat out (vs Rolling your own) then try one of those non alcoholic imports that they have,,,, I bet they would at least be tasty!

Many of those non alcoholic drinks, (O'Douls Included) actually contain small amounts of alcohol (like 2%)... so you have to read the lable carefully... If you have "liver damage", or a "current active virus", you wouldn't want to that! You'd be better off pouring the O'Douls down the sink, rinsing the can out... & filling it with water.... (It would taste a whole lot better....LoL

There are many sparkling ciders available in a variety of flavors, that are 100% alcohic free... Welches even makes a white grape, white grape & cranbery one... They are delicious, & you can buy Ginger Beer..... (which is alctually just STRONG Ginger-Ale, but it's natural & brewed) at any liquor store, co-op, trader joes on the west coast has great ginger beers available... & all these are actually good for you too!

Yeah, I never understood the concept of "social drinking."  I was always a member of the "hammer-em-down" team.  I could never drink just one or two beers, but I can do a glass or 2 of wine and stop.
Big glass of chocolate milk goes down real nice.  Tastes better than O'Douls too.

I agree Buckler is a much better tasting na. I'm a recovering alcoholic and got into trouble w/na beers before, so I can have none. If you're not an alcoholic I agree this or an occasional real beer will not hurt you.

odoul's? Damn, that is desperation at its finest!! Can't stand the stuff, personally!
My Dr still tells me that I do not have to stop drinking. She advises me to drink with moderation, a beer or two on the weekend or a glass of wine with dinner, etc..
My choice, all or none. I like the taste tooooo much, and living here in hot and humid south florida I might be inclined to get carried away. If I drink one, it leads to two, etc..
What is the condition of your liver, and are you currently on tx? Drinking on tx is not advised. And depending on what severity of damage you have, its pretty much a personal decision.
Alcohol is said to accelerate fibrosis by double.. But of course everybody is different.

Nothing wrong with drinking O'Douls but you should try Buckler.
It tastes much better. I'm with you in liking the taste from time to time. I think you could drink hundreds without worrying about the alcohol but you'ld never be able to. Taste gets kinda stinky after a few of them anyway.

O'Doul's??? Ugh! I tried that p-water when I was deployed to Saudi Arabia during Desert Storm; during the War all alcohol was strictly forbidden. All I needed to do was taste O'Doul's once to know it's not a substitute for anything.

I took my last drink about a month before dx and haven't missed it. It's been about 6 months now. The truth is I never liked the taste but drank socially nonetheless.

I haven't started TX yet and I suspect that when I finish TX  I'll never drink again except to toast at weddings and such.

My advise: Layoff the alcohol AND the steak until you're HCV-free! That combo will work your liver to death

Ugh.  O'Douls.  Why not just drink Moxie instead?
I guess the question is whether you are currently doing tx, what condition your liver is in, etc.
I'm not a medical doctor, but my feeling is that an occasional O'Douls, or even a real beer once in a while won't hurt you.  A 12-pack a day and a couple 30-packs on the weekend, now that will hurt you.
I drink white grape juice out of a wine glass.
I'm sure there will be plenty other responses to your question.
