Prednisone

I have been prescribed prednisone for a hearing loss issue today. Ive been und since July 2011. I have not yet taken my post tx vl test although all my blood work looks good. I was wondering if anybody has any info on this. I looked on past posts and found it all to be old and not real specific. Thanks ahead of time!!

Nobody thinks you are so dont sweat it.  The guys were just complimenting you.  When people 'advertise' around here - it's pretty darn obvious and everyone catches on.

I am not trying to use this thread as a way to advertise in any way!! Just wanted to point out the reason for hearing loss, and get feedback about possible remedy.

Thanks,

I followed your link. You guys (and gals) are really very good. I would come to see a performance by your group anytime. (Get that hearing fixed so you can continue palying.)

(As a Bluegrass musician I am sure you know Monroe Crossing. I was fortunate to be able to see and hear them about a year ago when they were performing nearby. I enjoyed every minute of it.)

Thanks everybody!!
I just got off the phone with the Doc, she said the prednisone would be OK and go on with it. It waas a month and a half after tx that my ears plugged  First they said I had a lot of fluid in them and it felt that way. It sounds like a head full of locusts. 2wks of antibiotics, 2 different ones and my hearing had not improved. I climbed the chain to the next level of Dr's and he said there were no signs of fluid and did some tests and confirmed my eardrums were working just like they should, but my hearing loss has become moderate to severe, and pointed out that I'm not a kid anymore!!Hah. But I know how my hearing was a month ago, and I know something has gone wrong. Its hard to blame tx as it was fine the whole time and even for several wks after. The head cold and all the infections that come with that is what I feel has caused all this grief. After all the tx drugs, I dont want to take even an aspirin, but this crazy ear buzzing has got to go!!
I play music for a good little chunk of my income, and deafness is just not acceptable. Go to www.southernreign.com and see what you think.LOL

Something similar happened to me. I was diagnosed with Meniere's disease. Lost most of my hearing in left ear. I take a course of prednisone a couple of times a year to combat vertigo, which accompanies the disease. It all started as you described- a head cold and clogged ears.

I'd consider finding out the results of the 3 month PCR as nygirl mentioned before considering the prednisone, even if you did it a week or two early.  If you started the prednisone now and have a positive PCR, you'll always wonder if you made a bad decision.  Just my personal unprofessional thoughts.

As willy said, these decisions are best left to the experts.  Wish you the very best outcome and hope the hearing issue is resolved quickly.

Perhaps your doc prescribed prednisone to reduce the swelling in your ears.
It seems to be the wonder drug of choice these days and in my opinion, over prescribed.
I'm hoping he just wants you to take it for a short time. It can be hard to get off of, and can cause all kinds of problems when taken long term.

Good luck.

its funny..yesterday my gf was saying there was a ringing sound in the house...she said can you hear it? i said i always have a ringing in my ear since tx...my daughter thought i was yelling at her on the phone.....i would wait a few months before taking more drugs....they say the best way to get rid of headaches is to bare with them until they pass...and in time your own body will take care of them...but i think most can't take it and go for asprin or whatever...please pm me if you find the answer to the hearing...for now i'm going to sit tight..no new drugs for as long as possible..think i would rather get a hearing aid then do drugs...i also have to say after tx it was very hard for me to remember to wear hats and warm cloths as i somehow don't feel the cold much...and it gets very cold here...a good way to catch colds...not wearing proper clothing.....good luck....billy

Slide,

I have taken prednisone several times since I completed treatment, actually currently I'm just winding down on a significant ten day dosing of it at the moment.

I have remainned SVR for five or six years. Aside from the bloating weight gain that I get from it I haven't had any problems at all.

When did you finish tx?  Any chance you can get your 4 week PCR done even early to see what that says? My biggest concern would be even if you did relapse you'd blame it on the prednisone and regret taking it even if it wasn't related at all.

If that test came back negative (which it WILL!) then I would not worry about taking it.  Once the virus is gone it's gone and gone and that is that. I dont believe in it being reactivated after it's gone because there is nothing to activate. :)

Of course, none of this is scientific but I wanted to let you know it's caused me no problems at all and what I think I remember is that only during treatment it could be an issue (then I would not take it unless absolutely life or death type necessary).

Good luck slideman on all fronts!

If you are being prescribed prednisone it could be to treat an autoimmune issue.  This could be related to treatment with interferon.  Is the doctor well aware or of the opinion that this could be treatment related hearing loss?

If you use the search engine at medhelp you will see that there are other threads here with this topic.  I would use (There are 2 search engines; the whole board and the more local forum engine) the forum search using "hearing loss, interferon" or "prednisone, hearing loss"  or prednisone, interferon, SVR" using the forum search. It may give you an idea of the nature of the issue, the treatment and how it relates to interferon, or whether it could be a separate issue.

My guess is that there could be a relationship to the hearing loss and IFN and that treatment would be based on that; not some other external hearing loss issue (such as vocational related hearing loss, genetics, etc).

You can also use the search engine to research the issue of prednisone as it relates to possibly undermining treatment with interferon.

My shallow understanding of that issue is that the doctors treating the one issue need to understand and communicate w/ the doctors treating you w/ IFN,   From reading other such threads my takeaway was that it can be done without adversely affecting treatment or SVR, but it is a bit of a balancing act since..... one is at one time trying to inhibit immune response while treating to stimulate immune response.

It sounds contradictory, but I have seen people who appear to have been treated successfully in this manner.

I think that some forum searching and reading will provide you some decent and immediate feedback, but also warn...... this is stuff for experts, and to some extent, even for experts fighting immune issues can have uneven results.

I wish I could help more but hope some threads can provide you a little more insight into the issue.

I did finish tx in Dec!!! Been und since wk 4. Am I correct in thinking if the virus is gone then its gone. What I mean is if I am going to be SVR it will be gone now? Thanks man you have been a real help with all this!!

I should give some more info. I finished tx in December. Caught bronchitis within 2 wks. Fought that and got rid of it. A month later I had the head cold version, complete with ear and sinus infection. One of the first things that happened was my ears plugged up. That has been a month ago, and they still feel clogged. Yesterday I went to the ENT and theu ran tests and said I dont have fluid in my ears, but I do have a lot of hearing loss and it feels like they are still plugged. I have a head full of locusts(it sounds like) all the time. I cant hardly understand my wife unless she is yelling, and I cant hear her make 'S; sound at all. How do you just wake up one day and cant hear? So the specialist gave me prednisone to open my ears up? Ive been off tx for  2 and a half months. From all I can tell I either have vl or not at this point as the meds have done their job by now. My first post tx vl test is at the end of the month. Ive called my tx'ing Dr but of coarse she has not called me back yer, but its early. So I wondered if you folks have had a similar issue, or if the steroids could cause me harm to my liver. Benn und my entire tx, and would like to stay that way.

There seems to be ongoing controversy about  immunosuppressive steroid(prednisone) use and how it affects or if it affects  HCV viral replication.

It is a very powerful drug with many uses, however I don't believe there is literature on it"s use for hearing loss?
Possibly discussing with your doctor about some other form of therapy fort your hearing problem in light of the fact you have not attained SVR yet and the viral replication uncertainty

Good luck..
Will

In conclusion, despite clinical evidence that the use of steroids aggravates recurrence of HCV, our in vitro study suggests that there is no direct stimulatory effect of steroids on the replication of HCV. As such, the increased viral loads after high-dose steroid treatment are more likely due to a downregulation of the immune response. In such patients, a dampened immune response allows viruses like HCV to replicate free of immune-mediated killing of their host cells. When a change occurs, such as a tapering or an alteration of immunosuppressant drugs, the immune system reinitiates and vigorously attempts to control the virus, resulting in acceleration of liver damage. Therefore, either steroid avoidance or maintaining low levels, coupled with a slow tapering of corticosteroids, may be beneficial to HCV-infected transplantation recipient

I would not take it! I think you are asking because of the risk it can "wake up" HCV. Many people that have HCV but don't know it start to feel symptoms after a course of prednisone. I can personally say this is how I found out I had HCV.

Not saying it would do anything once SVR but why chance it.  If you can avoid it and take something else you will be better off. it is a nasty drug.

best of luck

I understand your concern since you haven't gotten to the six month SVR yet and might worry about the steriod ramping up any stray virons.  While on trt prednisone is contraindicated for some of the meds (Inc), but since you've completed trt, shouldn't be an issue at all.  Of course, make sure you discuss this concern with your doctor, as you probably already have.

If you have already completed treatment I don't think there is any problem with taking a steroid.

What is your question about prednisone?
You have finished treatment?
