I drank about every day too and believe without doubt that is why I was stage 3 when diagnosed. No doubt.
I also drank just about daily before I knew I had hep C. I honestly don't know how much damage as I did not have a biopsy but my liver enzymes are good. I cleared the virus about a year ago. Have I drank since...........twice and I don't think I can handle alcohol anymore.
I hope for your sake and his that he gets his shite together and concentrate on getting in a trial or something for nonresponders to clear the virus. Good Luck
Denise
I drank every day wiith Hep C for over twenty years before I was diagnosed.
I had only moderate liver damage at that point,so he could go on for a long while.
The disease tends to speed up when you get into your fifties.
If you know you have Hep C you have to quit the booze for the sake of yourself and your fanily, there is no excuse not to!
You don't provide a lot of details, for example how much he drinks. But the rough answer is that if he has hepatitis C and drinks every day he will die prematurely from cirrhosis of the liver.
I'm sorry you find yourself in such a difficult situation. You might want to consider finding a support group for families of alcoholics. This is a very difficult situation. If you have hepatitis C and you drink alcohol regularly and/or in excess you are advancing yourself to an early death.
"What is his prognosis?"
Not very good - not very good at all.
There are many people who attempt treatment and fail the first time but come back and retreat with different variations and succeed. But someone with the active virus drinking that much means only one thing - more liver damage and more liver damage until there is no more liver to damage. And if he is actively drinking I'm not sure that anybody would transplant him either.
Without knowing any of his treatment information it's all just a guess but you ask any of the non-responders who are in here who have been cured if they think it was worth the chance of trying again.
What was his biopsy result?
