TREMENDOUS LONG-TERM STUDY RESULTS!!!

<a href="http://www2.gastrojournal.org/scripts/om.dll/serve?action=searchDB&searchDBfor=art&artType=abs&id=as001650850400383x&nav=abs">Long-term benefit of interferon  therapy of chronic hepatitis D: regression of advanced hepatic fibrosis</a>

(from the study):

"<i>Patients in the high-dose group had a sustained decrease in HDV replication (P = 0.008), leading to clearance of HDV RNA and, eventually, hepatitis B virus (HBV) in some patients, as well as a <b>dramatic improvement in liver histology with respect to activity grade (P = 0.0004) and fibrosis stage (P = 0.007). Strikingly, we documented an absence of fibrosis in the final biopsy of 4 patients with a long-term biochemical response and an initial diagnosis of active cirrhosis. Conclusions: High doses of interferon -2a significantly improved the long-term clinical outcome and survival of patients with chronic hepatitis D, even though the majority had active cirrhosis before the onset of therapy.</b></i>"

Hi Dave, you certainly will be in my prayers. I'm sorry to hear about your kin having this horrible virus/disease. But mostly I am concerned about you going off the oxy. It's gonna be tough, but I'm sure you already KNOW that. With all the pain I have w/ fibro and tissue damage I don't think....well I know, I couldn't make it w/o my morphine. My new dr has no problem w/ me being on it and getting ready to start a "fight" against the virus again. I think my pain specialist and psychologist has finally got me on the right regimine of meds. I'm now taking 45mg of morphine 3X a day....during waking hours. By the time I go to bed the meds have built up enough to let me sleep thru the nite....pain free.

And w/ the dose they have me on now...they say if when I start tx again, and "if" I suffer w/ more pain from the new tx., they can increase if need be. I hope the meds they have me on now, will be sufficent, even after I start tx again.

Funny how yrs ago when I was a "junkie".....I would have LOVED to have had these meds @ hand all the time. Now it's like I hate to have to take them!!!!! But if I don't take them, I have zero quality of life! I want to wish you the best and if you can't tolerate the pain....please don't make yourself suffer needlessly. You'll have time in the future to be de-toxed, by your doctor...and in a less painful way...just my 2 cents worth.

You will be on my "special" prayer list.....meaning as soon as I get off the forum today....I will lift you up to our "higher power"...mine being God. I thank Chevy for bringing my Christianity up in an earlier post....a long time back. She has been such a blessing to me and always has helped me to keep things in perspective. I have such a HIGH RESPECT for CHEVY. She's been a God send to me!

You hang in there and take good care of yourself. You've been through so much in the past, and you are one of my highest inspirations. I love ya Dave, and I wish nothing but the BEST for you. I can't think of anyone...well maybe a few...LOL   who deserve to beat this "crappy virus" and have a healthy life ahead of you. Love @ Prayers, Cindee

TX is becoming a burden to companies and big insurance to the tune of $20,000-$40,000+ for a 24 week regime. Do the math for 72 weeks and you'll get an idea as to the actual cost burden that eventually trickles down to the consumer. It's the insurance premium payer that needs to take note along with big insurance because out of 2,000,000 cases or so currently being treated, alot are unisured folks therefore shifting the burden of paying to someone else. The only way I see to make a difference is to simply talk dollars and cents to get govt. attention. In 5 years imagine how many will be in tx and who is going to pay? As the baby boomer generation ages, HepC will become more prevelant and govt. will have no choice but to take notice. You can contact Naomi Judd (of the Judds) by searching for her website and get insite on how she has been lobbying for HCV research since her diagnoses in the late '80's.

Tn: thanks for the research link- I've got a massive file of hopeful research from you alone.

I've gotten some great laughs from this thread, and it is greatly needed this week.  I went through withdrawal from the Oxycodone I've been on for 1 1/4 yrs because the Pain Specialist didn't renew it on time (he called to apologise).  Opioid withdrawal is a very unpleasant experience, but I'm going to try to stay off the Oxy if I can.  The neuropathy pain seems managable right now.  If I do need it for pain on the weekend (pain is worse right after my shot), I'm going to use it sparingly.  I also just found out (last week) that my bro-in-law has this cursed HCV- at least he has genotype 2 rather than 1b like myself.  Thanks for the laughs,  Dave

I think the most important/relevant parts of this study are that the majority of the patients had advanced liver disease/cirrhosis to start with ... and that they were improved by the high-dose regime of interferon (and, remarkably - only a 48 week regime!). And, that they followed these patients long-term (2-14 years). In my book, it shouldn't really make a difference what version of the virus it is re: this particular study - because the focus here is that we are seeing long-term histological improvement to severely impaired livers - as well as increased survival rates - based upon viral eradication and the high-dose interferon amount. Might there be different results in, say for example, tough-to-treat HCV geno 1's? Quite possibly. But I would still bet on similar improvements - just differing odds.

And having four of the patients go from cirrhosis to stage zero seems next to miraculous.

Damn, you definatly lead the crusade in research. You are definately the information man. I should sit back and just keep clicking your links and stop worrying. That news you just posted, was very, very much needed. If I read it correctly, it was only 48 weeks of tx also? Damn, Revenire must have a liver like a five year old by now with all the interferon he has taken!! Thanks for the link, gives hope to the lost ones (such as myself), still looking for more benefits.

The "pols" will be too busy meeting & greeting between now and November to get anything accomplished or even put on the agenda.  Even if Bush (or his administration)had the sense to recognize a national epidemic, I'm not sure he'd do anything about it unless it affected one of his family members since that is what it seems to take for him to make a definitive decision about anything.  Sorry folks.  I know I'm treading on some good Republicans with that comment, but I can't help it. Don't mean to get into a political debate with anybody but sometimes things hit home that I just have to put my two cents in.

Go for its noy Riba and can only continue to prevent replication and if the research is true improve histology.
Ps Ablome is not any medevil concoction..It happens to be a 17th century English term for with holding "fowl air" or wind. It became considered a gross act for some years until it was recognized as dangerous to the health. The opposite then became fashionable and expelling air was often greeted with a round of applauds when in company. However it is still not known to this day if such an act led to the great fire of London. Ive never lit one but am led to believe that in the right hands they can be regarded as WMD.
