Thyroid Problems and SVR

Willing had  made a brief comment in Trish's thread -

"but I believe everyone who has experienced thyroid problems has SVRrd"

And it got me to wondering.  As far as I know too, everyone that has had autoimmune thyroid issues from the interferon indeed has SVR'd.  I have my two year test coming up next week and think I too can prove that theory out - at least I have so far!

I was wondering if anybody knew if this were true. Can anybody remember anyone who went hyper or hypo who did not get SVR? I just can't.  Indeed if it is true, it gives GREAT hope to the thought that Trish indeed has already succeeded in her therapy.

it's a very intersting theory and I wish there were some data but...

I'm looking for that golden goose here so anybody with any input...........please give it!

Deb

well I've always had thyroid. It got better using HGH but then when I started tx it got worse again, so I had to return to my original dose.

I can't speak for SVR yet, but I can tell you it's harder to remember to take my thyroid medicine on tx.
Mainly because I take it early morn, on an empty stomach....but now am on 2 sleep aides. This made me so groggy I was forgetting....and that made my hypo get bad.

You MUST remember to take your dose every day. If you forget morn, take it later even if food is in stomach some will absorb.

It's really important to keep that gland working to avoid extreme exaustion during tx. as well as to avoid having dangerously low cholesterol and several other life threatening things from happening.

I think as long as you stay on the hormone it shouldn't effect SVR one way or the other, but not keeping the right dose in there certainly could effect success rates. The thyroid is an extremely important gland with several critical functions it controls.

Has anyone read this?

"Thyroid dysfunction induced by IFN-α therapy has shown no correlation with SVR.8 ,9,15"

It's from the journal article (link below), but I can't access the full article. It's from 2006.

Journal of Gastroenterology & Hepatology - Fulltext: Volume 21(1 ... - 6:47pmThyroid dysfunction induced by IFN-α therapy has shown no correlation with SVR.8 ,9,15 However, the relationship between early virological response (EVR) and ...

" I wonder if it has something to do with pushing the immune system to the edge and over.  "

I don't know if it's true but I like the concept...that means for having to take a pill every day we got something worthwhile (and for me the additional 12 pounds that I'm carrying around forever more don't bother me as much if I can think of it that way!)  It lifts me up out of the black swamp of despair and puts me on the beautiful golf course again. The treatment swamp monster can go back where it came from - we can find beauty in the smallest of things!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  YAY for us hepper obsessives!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's why I wanted to post about it to see what stats we personally could come up with with thyroid problem patients like me.  Sometimes, I find looking at our personal numbers in here (which of course are completely random depending on who is online and who posts and what group of people we have at what time) and find them to comfort me much more than any big study that has been done. It just seems more real somehow, you know what I mean?

I remember seeing a study where they looked for this correlation. I am not sure but I think they decided that it was not so.

I guess we all know what to put on our X-mas wish list. Do we ask for hypo or hyper?

I picked up on willing's comment too.   No thyroid issues and no SVR for me.  I wonder if it has something to do with pushing the immune system to the edge and over.  How can it be 2 years already?  Good work girl.  And how great that you are still here helping with some of the difficult issues of tx.

Tallahassee - I am sure glad to hear that your last treatment worked. It was sure a long road for you.

Makes you wonder, doesn't it.  I'm rooting for Trish!!!

My thyroid went hypo in the last 6 weeks of tx.  If SVR comes with a side of synthroid, I'll take it!  Had labs drawn yesterday - 12 weeks post-tx.  I'm waiting on the outcome.  Did I hear right that UND 3 months post tx indicates SVR if you're not cirrhotic (sp?) - that would be great.

Haven't heard of any thyroid issues in the swamp, though!

You know I love you Trin girl ain't no doubt about it, have from the very first minutes you posted!  FORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Much better to be a golfer than a swamp creature in the long run huh?

Deb - I don't think it's ONLY people who have thyroid problems that SVR but it sounded to me like it made a really good case for Trish, like maybe if the interferon hit us so hard that it destroyed the thyroid and in the process really got triple action working to kill off virus's - something like that.

Posts like Tallahassee's really DO give me even more encouragement for Trish....I was thinking about her all last night and then when I saw that it was like yay more reason to think she did it and just saVed herself a bunch of extra weeks poison!

Willing's comment got my attention too.
I treated from 1995 for over 9 years (cumulative) and never had thyroid problems until my last, super-long treatment...  and, coincidentally or not, but the latest treatment was the one resulting in SVR!   Though, personally, I doubt that there is a scientific correlation, but who knows, maybe it is a good "sign"!

Trish has many reasons to be hopeful that SVR will be achieved and will be achieved!!

Plus, we are all rooting for her!!
