Unsure about Lab results

Hi, I just had my first PCR in about 7 yrs, and these are the results that were emailed to me by my PCP:

HEPATITIS C VIRUS RNA PCR QUANTITATIVE
Component Comments
Interpretation HCV RNA Not Detected.

He called my virus "dormant" but I'm not sure what all that means; he's gone for the day so I won't hear back from him until at least tomorrow.  Could it be that I cleared the virus?

Wow, thanks for the info!  I get bloodwork every year (ALT, AST, etc.) which are always in the teens, though I've had a measurable AFP since I was first diagnosed.  I assumed my HCV is still active since I have a slight AFP; my dr. also told me recently that some people just have a higher normal baseline of that, regardless of HCV.

Good luck to everyone here, I'm so happy to hear about the new treatments that are becoming available!

It looks as if you only have the antibodies for Hep C. From one other of your posts it seemed you was und also at that time. Dormant is not used much these days by doctors when it comes to Hep C as one either has it or they don't and if one does has a viral load it is always attacking the liver. Looks good for you.

I see this is at least your second negative PCR, you do not have HCV

Is it possible for someone to become infected with HCV and then spontaneously clear the infection?

Yes. Approximately 15%–25% of persons clear the virus from their bodies without treatment and do not develop chronic infection; the reasons for this are not well known.

Looks like you are one of the 20% congrats

Have a great day

PS, it is not dormant you either have an active infection or you don't,
