thanks Mike.  I always feel like I'm having to defend myself.  I really want to learn and if I can, help.  I learned the hard way to go easy on weight lifting.

CONCLUSIONS: The present study shows that moderate exercise increases portal pressure and may therefore increase the risk of variceal bleeding in patients with esophageal varices. These findings suggest that cirrhotic patients with portal hypertension should be advised of potential risks during exercise.

Thanks. You handle(d) much more poundage than me although my intensity is quite serious. Good luck to those of us that choose to not be defeated by cirrhosis regarding our quality of life choices. d

Why sure, I'd be happy to answer your question.  I was bench pressing 400 lbs with 3 others .  We started with a ten reps and were working down.  I got horribly sick when we got down to 7 and threw up  pure blood.  I wasn't breathing properly and put alot of pressure .  Ended up in intensive care -Gastro told me to stop lifting weights but I haven't.  I just do less weight.  I had a mild bleed assisting my son pull a 600# Mako on boat.  Just coughed up a bit.  !st bleed was fixed w sclerotherapy(spelling) 2nd banding.  I have Portal Hypertension between liver and spleen which has something to do with it.  Ahhh Shuckins-gettin old anyway.  Have a good day now-heah?

I didn't realize that weightlifting caused you a rupture. If it's not too sensitive a memory could you tell me your routine at the time and if possible exact exercise which caused the varices to bleed. So did you completely stop the lifting post bleed. Shucks I really don't want to end my marriage to weight-training. I'm depressed enough with the prospects of cirrhotic portal pressure, varices, etc., etc.  In hours of "weight-training, bodybuilding, resistance exercise etc, and cirrhosis" research I came up with no result except for one comment in the past on some discussion board. Thanks. d

I'll weigh in on this. Lifting weights will not effect/affect your viral load for Hep C.  It can cause varices in the esophagus to bleed-at least it happened to me.  So have you had an endoscopy to have those areas looked at?  I hope you are seeing a physician for your Hep C.  How do you mean been sick for a year.  Flu like?  Yellow eyes and or skin, swollen abdomen, losing weight, tired, cramping hands etc.  I'm the knuckle head that doesn't know much but I know if I was sick for a year or 10 weeks at a time I'd sure do some checking with at least a Gastroenterologist.  Good luck...maybe I should have said dumbbell instead of knucklehead.  We can address that on the Hepatitis Social side.
