What can I do about this cough

I have hep c genotype2. I'm taking ribavirin and interferon. I have developed a dry hacking and sometimes wheezing cough from the bronchial area of my chest. It's mostly non productive coughing. I notice that it becomes worse on the day that I do the interferon inj. Is there any safe otc or rx medicine I could take when it becomes more than I can take? They say I'm already at stage 4 cirrhosis, but need something to tame this thing. I've tried cough syrup...Nyquil, but it contains alcohol, so a little worried about being able to take it.....cough drops don't really help. Tonight, I tried Delsium 12 hour cough suppressant syrup. So far, it's not working too well. Any suggestions?

If you have cirrhosis you should not take any drugs (even over-the-counter meds) before being pre-approved by your treating doctor. A hepatologist I hope. Asking drug advice online of laymen who don't know how extensive your cirrhosis is and your medical history is not a good idea.

Nyquil:
* Contains alcohol. Alcohol should never be taken by someone with hepatitis C and cirrhosis.
* NyQuil liquid contains acetaminophen which can only be taken in a limited amount for patients with cirrhosis.
* Nyquil also interacts with Beta-blockers (eg, propranolol/nadolol) which patients with cirrhosis and portal hypertension usually take.

Medicines even over the counter meds can cause complications of cirrhosis. Talk to your doctor about how to treat your cough. That is there job.

Good luck!

There are some sx of the Interferon that can affect the lungs.Best to perhaps have an xray of your lungs to discount any lesions etc..

I agree that all meds should be pre-approved by the treating doctor. Although it was family doctor on call that told me to get the Nyquil, it was my hepatologist who told me to see my family dr. about the cough. I am learning that I have to be on my toes and always question if I want certainty in answers even with all the doctors.

Well, of course, plenty of water, and an herbal tea with organic raw honey may be somewhat soothing.  I used to buy eucalyptus oil and pour a small amount in the shower, and breath the steam~

sounds like you have the dreaded riba cough which is pretty common during treatment, being your cirrhotic you need to ask your doctor what is best to take though I don't think much will help it............. Good luck with treatment.
