ex-acute C lab results

I was treated for acute Hep C from March to June 2007 w/ interferon & ribavirin and completely cleared the virus. All lab reports since June have been good and virus negative. I saw one today that shows HCV RNA, PCR QUANT 92 for <50 IU/mL and 1.96 for <1.7 LogIU/mL. Is this normal for someone who was acute and cleared? or does this mean that 'cleared' no longer applies? All other results are in the normal range except glucose. I can't access my previous labs so I have nothing to go on, and won't see my hepatologist for a little while.

I agree with Flguy. To me it looks like you had a 92 on a test that goes down to <50. I would wonder too!  Get retested and check it out.  You tx'ed for 3 months and when after tx did you get this test?

As Za suggests, repeat the test. It appears that the test that you took has a limit of detection of 50 iu/ml (which is equal to 1.7 log) and that the results were 92 (which is equal to 1.96 log).  Since you have been negaitive all along, you should re-verify with another test perhaps one with greater sensitivity.

What genotype were/are you?

I know that acutes can do with a shorter treatment course, and have much better chances of SVR (sustained viral response), but I can't remember the details of how long one should treat as an acute. Might depend on the genotype. There are others here who are more up-to-date than I on the acute treatment protocols, Jim for example. Might want to flag him. Put his name in the title of a thread and he will most likely answer you.

About your test result: My take (I am not a doctor) is that you should get a retest done. Your test result is close to the lower limit of the test, which might indicate that it is a false positive. But if worse comes to worse, it could indicate that the virus is back, i e never left completely.

When was the prior last viral load test you did? Did you do one at 3 months post treatment? A test done 3 months post is close to 100% correct, so let's hope for the best.

Can you call and talk to your hepatologist or your nurse? I would not want to wait to check this out. Not because there is any hurry, but because I would want to know.

Best wishes, Zazza
