genital herpes and Hepatitis C

How would the health of a person with chronic Hepatitis C (may need a liver transplant in the future) be impacted if they were to become infected with genital herpes?

I don't seem to have the answer to lessoning outbreaks of herpes except to really take it easy be aware of triggers and really listen to your body.
I have had a number of outbreaks recently because I am tired and can cope with little changes traveling etc
Good luck

Welcome new member.  This is an old post. (a google search or other may have brought you to this question). It's probably a better idea to start a new question.

Tip for any new member if you hover your mouse over a members name like Meenakshi8888 and click it will take you to their profile page.  If look look down on the left under post the most recent one will show.  For this member they only made this one post on Mar 16, 2013.  My guess is that this member may not reply..

One possibility (my personal guess) is that this person may have just made this post to help promote herbs and homeopathic treatments.   It's always best to discuss herbs and homeopathic treatments with your doctor before using any of them. Some may have some benefits, other may have none and other could have more dangerous side effects depending on your medical condition in my personal opinion.

Some members who have been active sometimes will be away for months or even years, they may or may not return again and sadly some have past on..

This isn't live chat and it may take up to a day or so for someone to answer. if still no reply you can Post a Comment.

This thread is about 6 years old so Im not sure the original poster will see what you wrote. All the same...I thought it was an interesting topic. I dont have genital herpes but I saw the Neuro last week who thinks I may have shingles (without the sores) I know that has nothing to do with this topic...except that they treat genital herpes and shingles with the same meds. The doc prescribed me Valacyclovir which is the generic for Valtrex. So...I did a little research. Come to find out...there is a trial right now with Valacylovir on patients with Hep C and Herpes. Apparently they want to see the affect Herpes has on the HCV viral load and if treating the Herpes with Valacylovir affects the HCV viral load at all.

"The purpose of this study is to study the effects of valacyclovir on patients who have hepatitis C and antibodies to herpes simplex type-2. Herpes simplex type 2 is a virus which causes genital herpes. Some persons with genital herpes have sores in their private areas but most persons do not have any symptoms at all. Valacyclovir is a medication which is commonly used to treat or prevent outbreaks of genital herpes. This medication is already approved by the Food and Drug Administration to treat genital herpes. Valacyclovir has not been approved to treat chronic hepatitis C."

Primary Outcome Measures:

"Effect of HSV-2 suppression on HCV viral load. [ Time Frame: 12 Months ] [ Designated as safety issue: No ]
Measure the decline in serum HCV viral load in patients who have chronic hepatitis C and HSV-2 infection who receive the 3 grams daily valacyclovir versus placebo for 12 weeks."

Having herpes with hep c does injure the liver more. You already have one virus and then you get another which not only makes you less able to cope with each virus but herpes does actually injure the liver as well in its own right. Take it easy don't get stressed and find out what keeps herpes at bay. Dietry changes maybe but make sure it does not aggravate hep c.
I have both and am considering eating same healthy food but taking lysine pills sometimes (not too often coz gives gall stones) and taking astragalus and pau d'arco herbs alternately month at a time. Also taking homeopathic echinacea 3x month on month off for a year.
Good luck. I am severely troubled by both viruses. I was fine til herpes met me even though I had had hep c for more than 20 years :(

I know a friend with herpes and she never had one outbreak during or after treatment so I think maybe the info about is incorrect.

Aloha,
I've had HSV for nearly 15 years now and always had numerous outbreaks.  I was on Valtrex daily for about 11 of those years but still had at least 8-10 events a year.  I know several friends with HSV and they rarely got outbreaks.  I was frustrated.  Then two years ago I was diagnosed with Hep C Type1a.  Immediately I questioned the doc about the relation of the two.  If having hep c could cause my HSV outbreaks.  They shrugged their shoulders and said, "good question, we'll look into that."  Still haven't heard anything back from them and it slips my mind asking them because the outbreaks are essentially gone.

I started Hep C tx 9wks ago and stopped taking valtrex at the same time and I have had just one minor outbreak since but was able to stop it with just a few days of valtrex.

If I can beat Hep C maybe I'll be rewarded with a bonus of fewer HSV outbreaks.  That would be very cool.

so to answer your question hiker, they would probably be burdened with numerous HSV outbreaks.  Whoever it is in need of the transplant I wish them all the best.
Peace.

Not that I know anything about this but I don't think herpes (genital is HSV2) significantly impacts HCV but rather the other way around.   People with HCV experience more herpes events due HCV's drain on the immune system which regulates herpes.  A non-HCV person who has had herpes for a few years may only experience zero to two outbreaks a year whereas the HCV/ HSV2 person may have four to six outbreaks or more.
