Sorry to hear the news. AFP = 9000? You had the MRI done on Sept 22? of last year? When do you mean. I have never heard of an AFP level that high. Norm is between 0-40 nanograms per milliliter (ng/mL) or micrograms per liter (mcg/L). Anything over 500 is considered diagnostic of liver cancer. Are you seeing a hepatologist at a transplant clinic? Are you already listed? It does take experts that are used to diagnosing Liver cancer (HCC) to sometimes find it. Not any radiologist is qualified to review MRIs looking for liver cancer. The best are those that work with people on a transplant list.

Being cirrhotic from HCV increases the chances of developing HCC. Have they checked for  portal thrombus associated with liver cirrhosis might induce an extremely high level of AFP production. Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC)? Have they checked  the testicles, stomach, pancreas? High levels of AFP may also be found in Hodgkin's disease, lymphoma, brain tumors, and renal cell cancer.

Your should the best people helping you manage your cirrhosis. I.E. transplant clinic.

Remember AFP doesn't always correlate to HCC. I have a 1.8 cm tumor and my AFP is only 98.

Hopefully this is a false alarm. But you must follow through until they say there is no chance of HCC. Catching it early it is treatable.
Good luck.

I can't answer your question about the AFP but just wanted to say, wow, sorry you had to go through all that and glad you're okay!
