increased anxiety

took shot 28/48 last fri; taking 1200 riba also. since fri night i have been experiencing some difficult anxiety that i have not had since starting tx. anybody know if this may be due to inf or riba? feel like i want to crawl out of my skin, also feel like something terrible is going to happen any second (not sure what). phone rings & i jump.  no real changes in my life/circumstance to account for this. called & spoke w/ study coordinator, she will speak w/ doc. anybody else experience this? anyone know of a non-benzodiazapine and non-ssri anti anxiety agent that works?

I also experienced anxiety. My doc gave me 1 mg ativan to take as needed. It worked wonders. Good luck.

After what I went through today, (did I or did I not have a mini-relapse from last week to this week) I'm ready to accept my Dr.'s offer of AD's when I see him tomorrow.

Even before the mail came today and flipped me out, I've been fighting the depressions.  I'm super-sensitive to noise, especialyy.  The sound of cars going past my house is enought to make me want to do a Franz Kafka and get out an UZI.

It must be the vibration of the engine - as a lifelong musician, woodwind player, teacher, I'm extremely sensitive to sound.

But it goes beyond reason.  Any minor irritations make me want to jump out of my skin or do a final exit.

It's gotta be the drugs.

And it seems worse after morning Riba.

I keep telling myself that.  The pharmacist told me during meds training to PAY ATTENTION to mood swings/depression.

WHile I'm paying attention big time, now.

If I get script for AD's I'll let you know how I'm doing.

At this point I'm feeling desperate for some relief.

And the longer this TX goes on, the more amazed I am that ANYONE ever makes it through to the end.

Maybe I'm just a wimp.

thanks for the input. wyntre u arent a wimp, youre a fighter. if i remember correctly, even rocky balboa had some tough rounds.

I had anxiety sometimes while on treatment.  My doc prescribed xanax.  I took half of one when needed and it did the trick.

buspar (buspirone ) is not a benzodiazepine nor a ssri however it does have an effect on on 5 ht 1 and 2 receptors tri cyclic anti depresants are another choice although they also effect 5 ht receptors in some instances meprobamate and phenobarbital are old ones and do have problems with addiction side effects and drug interactions also some of your atypical anti depresants could be an option such as welbutrin (bupropion) also some people have some luck with benadryl for anxiety a few thoughts best of luck

thanks for the suggestions. benadryl sounds like something for me to try 1st (non-prescription). will check w/ docs office tomorrow just to get clearance.

I know just what your talking about. I felt like I was crawling outta my skin, and I could barely stand that sensation!! My doc gave me klonopin for this, and it took the edge off. It did go away, but it would return from time to time. Horrible feeling that "impending doom" cloud along with crawling skin. yikes.
It's just the tx though, your not losing it.

You're NOT a wimp at all!! What you're going through is NORMAl for this horrendous treatment!!
AD'S may not be a bad thing at all for now! My husband had to get on them and he's never been on them before! And sounds bothered him A LOT! Especially the dog licking, scratching, etc. I have never before seen him in such a state as he was in before getting on AD's . The doctor told me to watch out for him, that if he needed to get on them it would have to come from me, that he wouldn't realize it. I'm SO glad he got on them!
We decided we'd worry about withdrawals from them after this was over.
I think you need to talk to your doctor about them. There's no shame in getting the help you need and DESERVE right now!
Remember, it's not you, it's the med's!!

Thanks, all, for sharing.

I'm gonna get a script in the morning.

I am so glad that others know what I'm talking about! I just took a warm bath to try and calm down, but I have days where noise, smells, touch and the phone ringing, grate on my nerves. This is one of them. I do take clonazepam, in fact just took one, but I hate to take any more meds than I already do. I try to use them sparingly and they aren't very strong. As far as Buspar, someone mentioned that and that stuff makes me dizzy and nauseous. Can't imagine an anti-anxiety med that I don't get along with, but this one gave me a horrible reaction. And I kep trying it for a few weeks. Finally got where I couldn't hold up my head and the spinning was horrible. Just my experience. It's a safe drug even for pregnant women. Just not safe for the Ladybug!:)

Any other recent changes is diet or habits? Like cut out smoking, caffeine, new diet supplements, vitamins, new protein drinks, exercise routine? Any other life changes in the family or work situations? Lots of stuff can cause anxiety and sometimes a combination of things can mount up on a person.  The answer is not always another pill, sometimes it is.

I thought it was just me from upping my riba dose!  I've  started experiencing some axiety stuff too. I try to slow down my breath and like that cute ladybug says, hot baths help. Anything relaxing.
Wyntre, you are always show a positive attitude and are a great example. Just because we know its from side effects, doesn't stop us from feeling it.
p.s. I saw a red-shouldered and a sparrow hawk yesterday. Let your feathered friends lift you up.
146021 tn?1237208487
Hey girl how are you? You know on top of the meds we do have a real reason for anxiety. Change brings on anxiety and not knowing what the future holds does also. I worry that when I get off these meds it will be anti-climatic. You know, like I'll expect my life to suddenly turn perfect and it wasn't in the first place! You are agreat calming force for me, your picturesque descriptions and your tongue in cheek humor!
Be well,
Janice

And here's another thing, I get really upset coming to the boards and then I don't stay away either. I need a life! No one answers me half the time and then I have to go have a pity party. And I think I'm getting fat on top of everything! I'm trying to just get by but this is a hard day! Thanks for letting me vent, I need to go read a book and dry what's left of my hair.
149918 tn?1208132344
YES, YES, YES, I think it was the inf, my doc gave me xanax to take as needed, it worked. I could not have made it through tx with out. now 5 weeks post and I have not needed one. Take care Pam

Dear Ladybug.

I'm sooooo sorry you feel like that.

You know, I think you sound sooooo on top of everything, and confident, and strong.  And I guess I think of you as more experienced, only coz dumb me just started posting 2 months ago.

I can't thank you enough for all your funny, kind, caring comments.

What are you reading?  (I just finished "Of Human Bondage - hahahahaha.  All nearly 1,000 pages).

Uh-oh.  Guess that's Community-speak.

This has been a really rough day for me, too.
Also, I think for a couple of other folk, like DP, web52.

But, LB, just wanna let you know how very very much I appreciate you.

You're a kind soul.  As OH said in a lower thread, I try to stay positive but today I slipped up bug time.  (hahahaha - just caught that - meant BIG time)  It's posters like you who help bring others back on task.  (like that one, HT?  teacher-speak.)

"I get really upset coming to the boards and then I don't stay away either. I need a life! "

I think besides the support we get here, its something we can do! I'm doing a watercolor that I work on for 5 minutes each evening. Its ridiculous. But, I can come here and vent, ask a question, and maybe help someone.   You have a life! You just don't like this chapter.
146021 tn?1237208487
Just needed a good nights sleep I think. It's 5:30 and I feel great this morning. And Orphanhawk, you know I am not a morning person! You're right, this chapter is not so great.
Wyntre, just ignore me when I whine. You have so much going on in your life and then I'm acting like a big bug baby. Tuesday night my son plays high school soccer but it was cancelled because of TAKS test. I wouldn't have been on the forum in the school system didn't have that mandatory testing in this state. It's the school systems fault! (Never mine)Good luck talking to your dr. today. You still have 3 weeks to get those numbers where you want them.

Yup Interferon...it's a LOVELY medication huh?  I can't believe that YOU of all people feel that way because since you came on here you've been a "fan favorite" for sure.  I've noticed that everybody just loves you so it's just bizarre for me to read all that.

It's funny how often we don't know how people perceive us and let me tell you - you are 100% backwards here dumb ass!  You are just adored! Get it through your thick head!  :)

The interferon can REALLY make us more depressed than we ever expected. My doc put me on Paxill 20mg a month BEFORE I started treatment because of it.  It's helped me SO MUCH.

As you may know, I lost about 80% of my hair between tx and my thyroid. It came out in buckets and I was just so so upset about it. The hair I had left looks like baby hair, it's so FINE (and my hair was always HUGE).

I finally went and got a bunch of wigs. Let me tell you - it makes SUCH a difference! I got some that were in the same sort of style that my hair was in - in about the same color and when I came in to work NOBODY realized it was a wig and people were complimenting my new hair color hahaha.

It just helps me SO MUCH to look in the mirror and see ME not some wrinkling dried up old bald lady looking back!

If you could consider it, go to ebay. That way you don't spend $500 and you can see if one works for you. I've gotten a couple that I didn't like at all...but for $30 I didn't care. At $500 I would have had a heart attack.

If in any way I can help you PLEASE PLEASE let me know.  I hope you know I would do anything I could at all to help you - I mean that.

The mental side effects of someone on treatment are never to be underestimated.

Often people have to try several different ADs, which take weeks to work, before finding the right one for them.

This accounts for many of the "zany" episodes on the forum.

Have a wonderful day. Spring is coming.
146021 tn?1237208487
AWWW coming from you that has made my day! I sure hope it's the meds because at my age I can't be PMS OR pregnant! Thanks so much for the nice words, I really don't know how you continue to offer support for others after 72 weeks of hell. And what you've been through was hell! You are an inspiration and truthfully, I push myself to keep going to work because you only missed like 3 days in all that time. I'm so competitive! (Actually I already lost that race because I was unemployed for 8 days)
Anyways thanks for the pick me up, it was better thatn a glass of wine, and healthier too!

LB,

I'm glad you feel better today.  Me too.  Hopefully we'll all stay like that.

What Najeen said is so true.
"This (med-madness) accounts for many of the "zany" episodes on the forum.

NYG,

I agree with LB.  And I also don't know how you did 72.

I know how you feel, something similar has been happening to me in one way or another. I went on A/D's a few months back to try and add in an "emotional buffer" in case any new rash-like challenges came my way. I don't think I could handle it if things got much worse, I'd end up quitting if they did. So I figured a some artificial joy was in order until I get this dreary nightmare finished.

First I went on Lexapro, which apparently has a lower side effect profile than most other A/D's. Unfortunately it didn't do anything for me, at least none that I could notice. So then I switched to Effexor, which again I don't really think is doing anything. I don't know maybe it's doing "something", but I still feel pretty miserable most of the time. But just because I haven't gotten any benefit from these two A/D's, that doesn't mean you wont. Everyone is different when it comes to their responses to the various A/D's. I'd consider trying one out and if it doesn't work, then try another one. I'll probably end up trying yet another one, as I don't think Effexor is working for me. The only thing that worries me are withdrawal symptoms, that's one danger of A/D's. The withdrawal symptoms can be really gnarly, especially while under the strain of IFN+riba. So be very careful about that if you do decide to try one.

And I don't remember if you are already taking Atarax for your rash, but if you aren't give it a try. It has anti-anxiety properties in addition to helping with itching, although it usually just makes me tired. But I'd rather be tired than crawling the walls. Anyway, hope you're feeling better. Hang in there, we'll get through this.

I am glad you're happy with your dr. I looked all over both archives because of what I posted to you once before re: svr. Someone came on and said she was not und at 24 weeks, kept treating till 48, was a geno 1 and became und. She said that's why they call them odds. I loved her story because just think if she had given up? The odds would really be against her if she didn't try. Good luck!

I've never been a frequent poster on this forum. I've always read and learned.

The mental side effects of both HCV and especially HCV and treatment are very strong. This is why so many on treatment are on ADs. I see many here who are not even treating that exhibit extrahepatic manifestations of the disease. Perhaps they had mental health issues before being diagnosed? I don't know.

Just look at all the people accused of being revenire. Now I'm been accused of being him and so is hardcoreback and others. Some people seem to see revenire under their beds.

Najeen,

I don't know whose accusing you of anything and to tell the truth, i don't want to.

I just wanna say I've enjoyed your comments, as infrequent as they are, and have gotten interesting new insights from your perspectives.

So I say keep posting.

LB,

As usual, you know how to say the most encouraging things.  You're
right.  That's why they're called odds.  :)

Thanks for that.
