liver failure due to Hep C

First i will give a brief backround..my father was diagnosed with hep C about 6 years ago....last thanksgiving he was in the ICU for about a week. His last right were read and all, we thought that was it...but he pulled through and then signed out "AMA" he is very stubborn,a nd th meds the give him made him violent and angry, the nurses were happy he left after the bed pans started flying at their heads!
anyways, he is now in endstage ive failure and is getting progressivly worse very quickly. the beginning of the summer he had more varices(?) veins in his esphagus tied off and was told it had to be done every 6 weeks...after his last surgery about 5 weeks ago we got alot worse, before we noticed the fatigue and abdominal sweilling, and memory loss, after the surgery he vomited for days, throwing up 2 of the bands ...he started having tremors in his hands and his legs...he has been falling...he describes his head as taking a few seconds to catch up every time he moves...he knows its happening...his ammonia levels are high and he is now on lactulose...his wbc is in the 30's, nothing is good....my question is this, how long will this last beofre he dies? weeks?months? i  dont know if this will be a long slow prgression or if at this point, it is rapidly approaching? how fast does the liver deteriorate at this poin t?

Hello, sorry to meet under these circumstances...my take only...and of course I'm no expert on this,

but I don't think any human being, including expert doctors, can verify to the day or even week or maybe even month or year in a few cases, when a person is going to die...Sometimes that might not be such a great thing, and some people maybe live and suffer on longer then they would choose...hopefully, this isn't the case here...

I've just known of so many people who defied what the doctors said in their own cases....

my own younger sister had liver and kidney failure and was given a 5% chance of pulling though, and yet she's here almost 5 years later, in not the greatest health, but she pulled through that okay, all things considered, she was a medical miracle! She was in intensive care for 4 months!...

with her it was a matter of stopping the drinking, and taking excellent care of herself and eating really well, resting then exercising when she could....

of course, I know hardly anything about your father, and he might have a completely different set of circumstances...I'd just try to see what the docs say and make him as comfortable as possible, and try to bring some humor and positivity to him, if you can....even if he doesn't act that receptive or responsive, he might just be registering it more deeply then you think...so sorry for this, and best of luck....
