"How much better is this than the now treatment drugs? Its cuts time in half you said..which is great!! Is it pretty much the same as far as everything else?"

yes as nygirl mentioned the big news is that genotype 1 svr rates are 70-75% rather then 45%. That is a huge change.

Also Many people can't tolerate these drugs for 48-72, or even 96 weeks As these new drugs and combos of drugs evolve less treatment time should eventually equate to less toxicity, less people having to stop treatment, less long term side effects, and therefore even higher svr (cure) rates.

CAN cut time in half but you have to remember you are adding a third drug into the mix in order to have better odds of being cured really - not as a shortcut on time (even though that seems like a dream curing the disease is the goal not how quickly you can do it).

We've been waiting for telapravir since I joinned this forum back in 2005 and it was called VX-950. Hopefully it will be soon.

I just looked up Vertex and they issued a press release about the new drug Jan 20th which looks promising for the drug to be approved sometime this summer, I hope :)
Some of us can't wait much longer

"You would think they only would do this if they were confident of approval."

Or they are going to market it outside of the US.

May 23 2011, is the rumored decision day from the FDA.  Vertex recently began to set up a large manufacturing facility in India for Telaprevir.  You would think they only would do this if they were confident of approval.

It will be interesting to see how widely available it is and how soon if it is approved.

The two new drugs telaprevir and boceprevir are in the final approval stage with the fda and hopefully will be available by summer.

Either of these drugs will be added to the current treatment of interferon and ribavirin. If you respond quickly to the treatment you many people are able to cut the treatment for genotype 1 from 48 weeks to 24-28 weeks and the success rate is somewhere around 70-75%.

There are many helpful knowledgeable people on this forum many who have been through treatment or are currently treating. Weekend traffic can be a little slow on the forum so sometimes it takes a little time to get a response.
