platelet levels

does anyone know how long it takes  or if your platelet levels will dd get better after you svr after treatment?

Hi Ralph

Depends on how much liver damage you have. There is some evidence, and much discussion on, if a fully cirrhotic liver can repair itself. If so, how much, and how long.

From what I have seen no one really knows as we are the first to have so many with so much damage even have the opportunity to heal. There is just not much data mostly theoretical.

But bottom line at least your liver wont be getting any more damage from the virus and will have a chance to try to heal.

Again depending on severity of lever damage months, years, decades and maybe never. No one really knows for sure that I have seen.

We will just have to be careful for the rest of our lives, hope for the best and be glad with what we have.

I have cirrhosis for 7 years now and platelets about 80-90 range so I am hopeful and will see what happens going forwards.

Good question.  I am post SVR24 and my platelets went from a pre Tx # of
118 to currently 134.   It is my understanding that it will take 2 years for them to return to normal if your cirrhosis reverses.  I'm very optomistic that mine will as I'm only 16 points away from the range of normal.
The biggest surprise post SVR24 was my Alkaline Phosphate. Pre Tx they were 189 and out of range, to currently 99 and normal for the first time since becoming cirrhotic.  That's a drop of almost 100 points, or as I prefer to say almost half of what they were pre Tx.
Am curious as to what others have experienced.

What did you Tx did you do? I took interferon, and my platlettes were still low 1 month eot, my pharmacist said that platelets were the last thing to come back to normal. But like Lynn wrote, it also depends on the condition of your liver before Tx.

I am post 24SVR, G2, Sov/Rib 12 weeks,  cirrhosis well compensated.
In 1999 Platelets were around 140 afterwards they gradually went lower over the years to 88 just before I started tx last April
During tx tbey went as high as 127 and back down to 110 or so.  6 weeks post tx they were the lowest ever 74.    12 weeks when I achived SVR they were at 97.  24 weeks up to 107 all other blood test are normal still HCV undected as expected.   The expectation is the count will continue to rise slowly over time.

I have no worries or concerns about my platelet count and continue to take 81mg of aspirin a day for CAD per MD.

The HALT C trials showed a good percentage of patients with cirrhosis had reversal of the amount of fibrosis (scarring) in the liver. About 20% actually went from Stage 4 to Stage 0-1 after 5 years post treatment. A large percentage of the others had some improvement in their stage of liver disease.

Personally, my platelets went from just below the lower range of normal to normal after the completion of treatment. I expect that this will continue as time goes on. I got my SVR last year.

Also there is a differential (not sure if that is the correct word) of 11 points either way in the platelet tests. In other words if your platelets are 100, it is considered the same if they are 89 or 111.

Mine were 112 at start of TX Fell to 52 during TX  67 EOT 152 WK8/EOT and are now just below the range.

I am told I have no liver damage.

Thank you very mach for replying  to my message.  I reached srv about 13 weeks ago. my alkaline Phos. leval was 240 when I started treatment and was 143 on my last blood test about 3 weeks ago.

Hi Sandi , Thanx for replying to my message , my Tx was Solvadi and Ribavirin for 24 weeks.  12 weeks post treatment my gastroenterologist I was cured and i was to see her in six months for check up my platelet level was 55.

Hi Jim , Thanx for you response to my post.  I too am genotype 2 and my treatment was for 24 weeks on  Sovaldi and Ribavirin. After 12 Weeks post treatment  my gastroenterologist said I was cured and had achieved SVR. all my numbers on my blood test were normal except for my platelets which were very low 55 , but he didn't mention it and made an appointment for me to see him in six months.
