It's called Tinnitus and I've always had it.  There is no treatment for it other than retraining your mind's perception of what it is.

And what it is is the cilia (tiny hairs in your ears) vibrating and making the zinging noise.  I've even heard high pitched super sonic whistles!  That is how we hear of course, with vibrations, and the vibrations equal a sound library you carry in your brain.  Once the sound is identified, the body moves on to the next sound or stimuli.

However, in our sound library there is no corresponding name for the cilia vibrating so the nervous system then enters flight or fight mode as it tries to ascertain whether this strange noise is a threat to our survival.  In turn, this heightens your awareness of it and makes you feel  more tense and stressed and so the cycle goes on.

Btw, it is considered a disorder of the nervous system (auditory is part of the nervous system, believe it or not!) rather than an audio disorder.

I found it useful to just tell my brain what it is and that it is nothing to be scared or frightened of, I then find I am not so conscious of it and it gradually recedes.  At any point during the day or night, if I listen "in", it's always there.

If it prevents you from sleeping I have heard of people who set a TV or radio to static (white noise) which seems to mask the sound, however it doesn't work for me...

I have no idea what silence sounds like...

I also do not know if it goes away but I suspect that ones you are aware of it there is no turning back...

Me too - wish it would stop.  Has anyone found a way to stop it - shall I ask my doctor as it is driving me nuts. It is a minor side effect - I read the list yesterday to make sure.

Would someone please stop that eternal ringing!!!!! LOL!

Yes, I have had it since day 1.  Recently though I have had the dizziness and lightheadedness too.  I am thinking it may be fluid in my ears because my hemoglobin is up to 11.4 from 10.1.

Good luck =)

Yes
I have not had silence since I started tx.  I think it's a common side of the treatment.

I get the ringing or thumping in the ears all the time and am also frequently light headed, even though my hemoglobin is 11.1. I have noticed that the lower it gets, the stronger those symptoms become. I don't think there is much one can do about it. You need to kind of integrate it into tx.... ;-) When was your hemoglobin last checked and how much was it?

Hope you are having a great holiday!!

Much love, Marcia
