Hi there,
I believe it depends on what is going on in his mouth. Some of us get a thrush-like hard plaque in the mouth; I had one for several months on the back of my tongue. My doc Rx’d Nystatin, a swish and swallow suspension. It didn’t seem to do much good; and the condition eventually self-corrected. Another problem that can develop is oral candida; and some of just seem to get miscellaneous sores and ulcers. Most of these will resolve at the end of treatment. If you’re just trying to manage this, there’s a prescription product called ‘Magic Mouthwash’ that needs to be formulated by the pharmacist; it contains equal parts of Lidocaine, Maalox, and Benadryl—and sometimes Nystatin as well. This stuff numbs on contact, and provides near-immediate relief, but doesn’t often deal with the root cause. This **** can be a nuisance; I wish him well.

Has he tried Biotene? It comes in different forms. I have the mouthwash and it's very soothing.
