supplements before starting tx

spoke with my dr.'s nurse today. Dr.wants me to start drinking no less than a gallon of water daily, milk thistle 1000mg three times daily, fish oil 1000 three times daily, vitamin e 400 daily AND vitamin d 2000 daily. Anyone else doing this prior to startng treatment. I dont reallly care if they told me I had to do all of that standing on my head whistling dixie it would be a done deal. But hadn't heard anyone else mention it so I thought I would ask. Thanks.

I had gone to two other dr.'s before I met this one. The first two I wanted to get up and run out of the office. You know that saying "dont get a second chance to make a good first impression" well that was me. Then I found this forum and it was like a miracle truly. Probably saved my life. When I said I was lost, I really was. My pcp just looked at me like I was a piece of trash. The "how did you get this" look. She was no help AT ALL, and yes Karen I have to win this I have way tooooooo much to loose. Two great kids and three grandkids with #4 on the way any day. :) Too many things to do STILL in my life. I do miss an occasional glass of wine or a beer at the beach, but now I have a gallon of water to drink on a daily basis so there would be no room for wine or beer. LOL We all will do what EVER we have to do to get this over and done with. Thanks to all, this place is awesome!!!!

My 2 cents. My Dr requested I take milk thistle immediately after diagnosis along w/ multi defense vitamin. I began whey protein shakes and a green defense powder w/ it also. I also keep sublingual B12, but was high on the last lab panel so I dropped it unless I'm really dragging. I added the Omega 3's when tx started because flaxseed was creating tummy issues. I think it's totally cool that your Dr. is proactive in requesting you get ready. I run everything by my Dr. but he doesn't usually bring it up. I feel that the supplements really give me the boost my body needs to support the meds.
You're in it to win it! Karen

He said brand didnt matter, mentioned on line or Sams. Go figure. Milk Thistle 1000 three times daily. Did fine with the water, lots of trips to the potty but forgot about half the supplements. Whoops! Not used to taking pills but I guess I need to learn. I dont see him again until Sept. Seems like forever but it will be here before you know it. Maybe get a little trip in before starting. Hope anyway. :) Wow seems like I'm the only one here who had to see a shrink. HUM....... kinda makes me wonder :) just kidding I dont care, I'll pretty much do what ever he wants just make me all better. Susie I cant thank you enough for pointing me in the right direction. I was a lost child. Truly. Thanks!!!

Good doctor me thinks, when he recommends milk thistle is there a particular brand he prefers as they are often different in strength etc. Am interested in this, maybe see if he has a preference.

Cheers

Paul    (good luck, may not be far behind you in treatment)

Only thing my doctor wanted me to take during tx was a muti-Vitamin w/o iron, had an EKG and eye exam. Wow a gallon of water a day??? Bottoms up, wishing you the best.

Sooooo glad you like your doc. That is important. Mine has put me on Fish Oil 1000mg 3Xday; vitamin D 1000mg (my vitamin d levels are excellent); milk thistle 160mg 3Xday; alpha lipoic acid and lecithin(can't remember dosage on the last two).

When do you plan on starting treatment?

Dr. is AWESOME, part of the md's involved with the latest drug to be appoved by fda. He is at Tampa General Hospital. Very happy and VERY fortunate to have found him, with thanks from Susie on this forum. Very excited to get it going to get it over with. See him the first week in sept.

I had to see the eye doctor.  There is a possiblity of some retina problems with the medicines.  I was okay during my last treatment.  Just a precaution.

DRINK THE WATER!!!!  I think it really helps.  I've had much less problems with side effects this time around and I didn't know about the water last time.  They want you to get your body hydrated so the medicines will do their thing more effectively.

Cardio?  Never had to do that before.

Docs have had me on the Vitamin D and E for a long time on and off TX.

It all sounds legit!  Are you ready to go?  Good luck!!

Because I am in a trial, there were certain supplements that I had to stop taking before beginning treatment- milk thistle was one of them so it does not "dilute" the study drugs results.  I was already doing the Vitamin D but actually increased to 4000mg and the fish oil/flaxseed oil and was allowed and encouraged to keep taking them.  I had my eyes checked and have had numerous EKG's throughout. I was also told to have my teeth cleaned and checked beforehand because any major dental work during treatment should be avoided. I've been encouraged to see a shrink for years but that is besides the point. .
