Probiotic Studies

Endurance runners' strenuous training can erode their immunity and make them more vulnerable to catching colds, but a daily dose of "good" bacteria could bring their immune systems back up to speed, Australian researchers have shown.

These bacteria, known as probiotics, are found in fermented dairy foods like yogurt, and are also available as dietary supplements.

"There is emerging evidence that probiotic supplementation can improve the health of a wide range of individuals including infants, athletes, people in highly active and/or stressful jobs, and in the general population," Dr. David Pyne of the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra, one of the study's authors, told Reuters Health.

To investigate whether the supplements help endurance athletes stay healthy, Pyne and his team randomized 20 healthy elite distance runners to take a capsule containing Lactobacillus fermentum or a placebo every day during their four-month winter training session. The athletes ran about 100 kilometers (62 miles) per week, on average.

As the researchers report in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, runners who took probiotics averaged 30 days of respiratory symptoms during the course of the study, compared to 72 days for those on placebo.

Probiotic treatment also doubled levels of interferon gamma, a substance secreted by T cells that plays a key role in fighting viral infections.

"Probiotics primarily work by providing good bacteria in the gut to maintain a healthy balance in the digestive tract and stimulating the immune system," Pyne noted. "In effect, probiotics top up the beneficial bacteria in the gut to improve the balance between good and bad bacteria." This better balance may improve mucosal immunity, or the ability of cells in the body's mucous membranes to fight off infection, throughout the body, he added.

While probiotics clearly benefit a wide range of individuals, including recreational athletes as well as elite competitors, they can't replace "a healthy, well-balanced diet, regular exercise, and good hygiene," Pyne said. To get the most out of probiotic supplements and foods, which can degrade over time, "consumers should purchase products and supplements from reputable manufacturers and ensure that use-by-dates are adhered to," he added.

I assume those cyber hugs are delivered safetly from the front.....

Scratchy - I s'pose we're all different but, joking aside,  I'm actually OK with 1 tblspoon once I get acclimated. Sometimes I'll make up a dose on the weekend and that can cause problems. Or if I miss more than a day or two consecutive, it takes a couple days to get that balance again.

My bottle says "teaspoon" not "tablespoon" with every meal. Is there a "Vision" forum? hahahaha

Just to give you an idea of how dangerous I want to live: I am taking 1/4 teaspoon. And not with every meal.

Coming this fall on CBS!

If I were taking three tablespoons of lactulose I might quit too. Honest to God, 20 times a day my 9 year says, "Awwwwww man Daddy, did you toot!?!"

I am really sorry to hear this Elaine. It's all happening so quickly for you two.

Wow. That's quite a bit of lactulose. Don't go on my say, but I believe it's pretty benign stuff. Dehydration would seem like one concern with overdoing it. It's possible that adding inulin into the mix would help - but again, I don't know for Nick.

I take 1 tablespoon of lactulose daily, and often a teaspoon of inulin. Is he avoiding animal protein?

The bloating sounds like it could be ascites (sp?), accumulation of fluid. Low sodium diet is one thing they order for that. You two are in my thoughts.

The obvious choices seem to come down to lactulose and inulin. Lactulose is prescription only, and can cause some fertile erruptions from the chasm of evacuation, if you get my drift. That seems to leave inulin. Cheap at Trader Joes. HR has suggested it more than once.

Good answer! I like your analogy. I am really a fan of fertilization so I'm with you on that...but I still need to know what works best for me....what is a good, how so I select a prebiotics?  I need choices....got any recommendations?

Here's my take on it - your body already has a gaggle of biotics (bacteria) growing - like a lawn covered in grass. The probiotics are seeds for the good grasses, and the prebiotics are the fertilizer. If you've got a lawn already established with a share of good grasses, fertilizing them will do more good than tossing on more seed. Of course, if you have killed off the grass (antibiotics, chemo, etc), then seeding the plot with a probiotic would be the first order of business.

I take both pre and probiotics - but I'm more particular about taking the prebiotics.

I do the weenie probiotic by drinking Dannon "immunity". I really think it helps because I stay healthy till I forget to buy some or run out. Maybe it doesn't work that way, but my body has been snowed into believing it....
Goof, I had no idea what a prebiotic was till I looked it up on Wikipedia, now I am so much more enlightened.....
"Prebiotic oligosaccharides are increasingly added to foods for their health benefits. Some oligosaccharides that are used in this manner are fructooligosaccharides (FOS), xylooligosaccharides (XOS), polydextrose and galactooligosaccharides (GOS). Some monosaccharides such as tagatose are also used sometimes as prebiotics"

OK, I just pasted the big words, but I was surprised to find out there was such a thing....

I don't know as much as I need to about health foods and suppelments. I am the type that likes to supplement my Big Mac with a large order of fries....
Hugs to all,
Bug

Everytime a snowboarder comes up from behind I fall. I'm like those fainting goats when it comes to being around snowboarders.

Tomorrow we will see if I fall on my butt or not. . . . .

I got lucky with a real locker once. 'Till I slammed the door at an inoportune moment. YowzaHHHH!! THat locker room smell still makes my palms sweaty though.

Y'all that are interested should think about a prebiotic. If you were only doing one, it would probably be better than the probiotic. I take lactulose and inulin.

OKAY...... I'm an all organic, health nut type that is STILL addicted to nicotine! But I'm not a bellyacher, am I ?   :)

(It IS my next battle after TX, HAS to go!! Got a feeling it'll rank above tx in hell for me! J/K!!)

That said, now I am pushing organic yogurt, lol!
I eat a lot of yogurt, make my 'sick day' shakes with yogurt, etc. Soooo, if you eat @ 3 servings a day, should that be enough without the supplements?

Gonna wait. Too many new treatment stuff coming down the pipe. Working on project at work that only exists one per state. Good karma making that thing work, then get new position designed for me, then mosey over to treatment. Some of us have to work for a living, hahaha. My knee worries me more than the HCV. I've been a good boy about drinking and smoking week (1988 last time) so biopsy says no damage or minimal. Taking all the supplements I/youguys can think of. I know several people that are just living with HCV. I think the bellyachers on this list have other things going on like weight problems, smoking, drinking problems. Now or in the past. No expert here, however.

ha ha ha ha...don't fall on your butt skiing this weekend! So you gonna get on the bus too? or are you gonna wait a while...nobody on this board waited longer then I did...was diagnosed in 01...gotta look at this all individually, to my thinking, but I know that's controversial....
