This is kind of interesting and somewhat of a political thread. Some time back, I stated here, that America will be better off once the boomers died off. Of course, since most of us here are boomers, including me, the monkey's really rattled the cage pretty hard.
My theory is, the generation is so large, it has created a lot of problems. But...lo and behold...I caught a broadcast from this guy ( phd economist and historian from Yale ) that has studied generations back to the early 1400's. He pretty much agreed and he too is a boomer. The boomers have been a mixxed bag. Some good things but some really really bad things. I recall one of his statements, 'The boomers have been telling everyone how to live since they came out the womb.' and equated this to the reason there is so much political discord now days. A big generation has a lot of competition for 'air time' so they tend to shout a lot, is the crux of it.
Now, to test this..think of your parents...and their traits...Now, I am a late boomer, on the cusp of the 13th generation or what is called 'gen-x'. They are called that because there are now, 14 generations of Americans. The latest...our kids, are The Millenial. Our grandparents were what is called 'the lost generation'. WWI, the excesses of the 20's, the great depression. It was a tough generation...I digress...my parents were cusp as well...between the GI Generation that fought WWII, and the silent or 'lucky' generation that came of age post WWII. They were named this because they are what was coined 'the silent majority' not politically active AND came of age in a very lucky time. They wouldn't say shiit if they had a mouthful. They just shook their heads, and went to work. Is that NOT your parents ? The 'Silent Generation', unless McCain is elected, would be the first in America not to have a president from their generation.
Gen-X'ers grew up in times of discontent when children were scorned in society, given no voice and basically ignored. Boomers had childhoods in the 50's. Gen-X'ers in the 60's when life was in total dissarray. X'ers are hard working, nose to the grindstone 'baby on board' as opposed to boomers 'Jesus was an only child' anti-family bumper stickers. As a result, X'ers are having larger familiy's and are what is called 'helicopter parents' involved in every aspect of their childrens lives as opposed to our parents, who let us play with guns in the house. lol !! I joke, but our parents had an entirely different style, for sure. Now, they are all afraid someone is gonna snatch their kids. When I was a kid, we would ride off on our bikes, be gone for hours and my parents would have no CLUE as to where we were. We just showed up at dinner time. unHEARD of today.
Anywho.... This site is interesting to see how they determined what made up a generation and the cutoff points from one to the other. . I have link to a two hour broadcast as well of this guy being interviewed and it's really fascinating.
