Hyperthyroidism!! Oh joy another ism!!! Any experience my brilliant comrads?

Well I knew something was off this week... Went to Maine 2 weeks ago felt great even "slowly" climed a little mountain! Came home took my shot, got my first migrain....had 3 since...just cranky...not myself at all...  and last night I felt like my legs were being sawed off by someone in a horror film....no sleep... legs in agony from the bone out. Walked the house all night, even after two valiums and 3 cups of Sleepy time could not sleep!  Lost 6 pounds in less than a week.

# (this is kind of social but related)   I remember Trish just writing about this the other night. The shakes Hyperthyroidism...  any news Trish?   (tried to write you Trish but said you were blocked!! I know you are not blocked so I don't know what the h*** is the matter with the notes and messages (tried to write a few people Debbie... Rita, Darla etc.. I'm still here they just wont allow private notes through :( (sorry to all for the social interuption just had to touch base here) I don't understand the gliches i'm having there

Any way back on medical track.... went for my labs today...found out though the blood labs were still above lowering my doses (and found out my Doc does not like to do Procrit?) Not sure what that is all about Yet.  I did find out I now have a lovely little condition called Hyperthyroidism!!! Due to, yes, as you all, who have experienced it know, is from the poison we ingest every day!    I know what Hyperthyroidism is and what it can do etc...  I am just wondering about how people here, unlucky enough to get it, have dealt with it and your experiences with it.

(Trish) I can't believe you and I ...started around the same time...now we get this to deal with at the the same time!!!

They are setting me up with a specialist... I guess I just don't know what to expect...and when my treatment is over (hopefully in December) will this also be gone??? Or it is one of those linguring plagues we have to deal with it?

Well I hope there was lots of good news also to go around today! It is so comforting to know
you are here, even when I am surrounded by people, I often feel all alone, because they have no idea what we are feeling or going through.  (Last night my partner used ear plugs to drown out my writhing in pain) A hug would have worked for me ;)    But  I guess I need to understand their side as well. But not being a selffish person at heart, I am not good with this "it's all about me" attitude my doc said I need to have.

Well it's all about Us here and thanks for being here, it's just as good as hug to me!

NP even handed me a mask today for the elevator. I took the stairs!

Marcia--Hope you are feelin better sis!!!  I got a little package today :0
            Thank you!!!

Trish--Speaking of labs....how did you do?????

Wish you all the best!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow that is interesting....Your doc is much more pro supplemements than most I have heard here. The European medical community in general are more open to alternative mediciine. I lived there for 17 years and found this to be very true, which I thought was fantastic and as it should be!    I nor the doc see no problem with eating the 'shrooms either.  But wow an Iron Pill!  I was told not to even look at iron! LOL
I learned Maitake was good for Cancer as you said but also Hep C. So I will keep eating them when I can get them.  This thing changes from day to day...still no word on the Thyroid results so I have to hang tight and wait for that!

Well what ever works for us we have to stick with! I think some docs are just more liberal with Supplements than others.
I just did shot #9 last night feeling a little foggy so will keep this short and sweet!

Talk later enjoy the day and keep feeling fine!!!!!

They do have shiitake supplements, am waiting for mine to arrive in the post. Until they come I will be eating them like crazy. It is not that shiitake are less potent than maitake or reishi or cordyceps etc.. They all boost the immune system in different ways.
Each mushroom has different attributes. reishi are mostly for respiratory problems incl asthma, maitake for leukemia and cancer, shiitake to up the whites... That's why I am taking them.

No, my doctor did not tell me to eat this. A member of this forum was in a trial and her whites were going down. The trial nurse advised her to eat shiitake, as she was not allowed rescue drugs nor supplements. And her whites came up and stayed.

My doctor has okayed all my supplements, even an iron pill. My hemo had been descending slowly over the course of several months and as we discussed my supplements, she monitored me. Over a course of 2 weeks my hb went up from 12 to 13.2. She was very happy with the results and told me to keep on doing whatever I was doing. My list of supplements is quite long, but well researched and I am sticking to them, for the moment at least. I will most probably talk to her about the shiitake next time I see her and see what she thinks. Anyway, for the time being it's the shrooms I'm eating. I don't see the difference of eating a whole bunch of shrooms or eating them in a bit more concentrated form in some pills. It can get kind of boring having shrooms every day. I might alternate, the days I don't eat shrooms, I take the supplements. let's see....  Sorry am blabbering, thinking out loud.

Keep fighting that dragon and stay UND forever!!!!

The Cliffs  of Mon indeed breath "taking" in both ways!!!  lol But worth the climb.

Well I still "eat" Shitake.  And Maitake (when I can find them) Mushroooms. I don't think Shitake are  a problem, as they are not  as strong as Maitake and Reishi, which are the ones that are known to really boost immune system.  And eating the 'shrooms  is not as potent as taking supplemets, which can include other ingredients that can affect our tx.   Check out  Dr. Weil .com   if you haven't yet. You can get a lot of good solid reliable info there on what is truly safe and worth taking. He always suggests the Maitake so I started on them, having great faith in him as an Alopathic and alternative doctor...of course he did know I was on Tx.

I am not sure they make Shitake Supplements,  or heard of taking them for the immune system...they taste great though! I guess their just not as potent as their more famouse relatives Maitake and Reishi, which are very hard to find in edible form here.
There is only one whole foods place in my area about  20 miles away they sells fresh Maitake mushrooms and they are not cheap!

You may not have liver enzyme spike from "eating" the lesser potent Shitake so that at least would be good. Did your doctor tell you to eat/take these?

My doc is soooooo anti supplements till my Tx is over. The only thing he wants me taking is Omega 3 supplements and a multi with NO iron. period!

If you find Shitake supplements again check the "hidden" ingredients.   It could have been one other filler ingredients that messed me up, not the mushrooms..I will never know.

Again all I know is what the facts were in "my case"...I took Maitake, Reishi and Cordyceps in a supplement called "Maitake Defense".  Which is a great supplement IF your not on a tx such as we are.  It made my Liver enzymes rocket in 2 weeks...and as soon as I stopped they went back down and stabilized. So the proof was kind of in the pudding for me. I was disapointed because I believe they do boost immune system but my doc said that could be true, but you don't know what else is in the mix that could affect labs. And why take the chance considering I was doing so well.

I hear you about not wanting to lower your dose, I feel the same way, my doc is not in favor of procrit either and when my WBC started going down around week 6, that is why I panicked and got the Mushroom supplements....but it was a bad move for my Liver. Can we ever win!!!

Any way I have 4 more months to go and I am going to try to hang in there and fight like h*&# so that I wont have to lower.  Now facing possible Hyperthyroidism due to the Interferon, as you read above...I don't need to deal with anything else!

I wish you all the luck for an easy gentle ride on tx.....seems to be going pretty well so far?   Not sure when you started but I know it was pretty recent.  I do shot 9 tomorrow.

As with everything I would check with your doc befor taking any supplements. (not that I did that LOL  I just learned the hard way LOL) Just so they know everything you're taking in case of any sudden lab changes, like in my case.

I was UND in week 4, which I feel so blessed about. I was just amazed my VL came down from 3 Million something to UND in 4 weeks! No sx except the very first shot.
That was the easy part! And I thought this is going to be a breeze!  Then the sx began to show a couple weeks thereafter...fatigue...aches...low WBC etc....hence  the 'shrooms.  Wating to hear on the thyroid problem.
But still keeping Positive...and still UND!!!

Good luck, Keep Positive and stay off of Danish horses on 'shrooms!!

I'm on shrooms every day now. Feels good, sooo good ...&(%#)(!#?)%%

I'm actually eating Shiitake preventively, to keep my whites up. My doc told me that they do not use 'nupe' if the whites go down, but prefer to do a temporary dose reduction. I just started tx, but I don't even want to get near that possibility. So I will keep eating them... at least until I get my Shiitake supplements.

I visited Møn with my kids, when we first came to Denmark 10 years ago. It's beautiful, especially when you take all those hundreds of steps down to those white cliffs. But getting back up... whoow... get out of breath just thinking of it

I didn't think it was too funny when he kept heading for the cliffs either believe me!!!
He was one crazy horse....unfortunately I didn't speak Danish, only English German and Dutch So he could not understand WOOO and thought I was saying Go! ;)

Mon  (can't put the cross through on my keyboard) was beautiful though.

Hope your day is being good to you and you're keeping clear of the shroom's! :)

Isobella You get the star on the forhead!!! And if FL were not in the middle of a Hurricane I  would fly down there myself and bestow the honor upon you!  I think we all feel at one time or another, through this ordeal, that we are all on the island of misfit toys together!!!I Waiting for that one special date...when our wish will come true. And IT WILL!!!  We will not be "Charlie in the boxes" forever!!!

And Marcia I was not talking about THOSE kind of mushrooms lol!! But that could be another story...

anyway...these are Maitake and Reshi and the cordyceps mix....group of Japanese mushrooms well noted to boost immune system.... When NOT on Tx they are very good for your immune system. But all I know is my Liver enzymes were down to almost normal before I took them (as a supplement pill)  and I thought hey why not  give my immune system a little boost because my WBC was down.  After a week of the mushrooms my liver enzymes shot up... and my WBC was still down. MY NP asked if I had been drinking...which I have not in it seems forever...  so stopped the mushroom supplements, levels went down again.   So I would suggest waiting till you're off Tx to experiment...the herbs and suppliments, which I am a huge fan of, are great when we are healthy and need just need a boost...but some herbs can really mess up Tx.  St Johnswort for ex...makes you more light sensitive, with tx the sun is sadly already our enemy. One must be careful. I am only taking omega 3 organic oil capsuls and a multi with NO Iron. Gave up my Milk Thistle too because my liver is normal and fine on its own.  My doc is happy again.

Sorry my story is not as exciting as Marcia's Psyhcadelic Bali experience ... but if you want to talk Shamanistic peyote ceremonies........ perhaps another time another venue! :)

And Marcia... I had quite an experience in your country on the island of Mon.  But I think it was the horse that almost threw me off a cliff into the Baltic sea...that ate some bad mushrooms!!! ;)

Isobella I hope you and yours and all our Floridian comrads here are safe and dry tonight!
Sending good thoughts and energy your way that Fay calms down and all are safe and sound.

Is it my mushroom experience you wanted to hear about?

I ended up seeing Aliens coming out of a space ship. One actually looked like a giant iguana. And the waves were phosphoric purple. It was quite a trip.

Movie guess...North Pole...could it be a Rudolph flick?  Or is that the South Pole?/

JK, I have no movie knowlege whatsoever.

I am curious about the mushroom experience you had, though.  I am considering trying them for immune boosting support. Or, maybe not.  What happened when you tried them??

Best of luck with the thyroid issues.  I hope they resolve quickly.  It's always something, isn't it...insult to injury!  I do hope you catch a break with this one :-)

(Don't tell Jasper...  this is code ;) :)

Again thanks for your sage advice nygirl...I got my T4 labs back again...they say they are still normal....TSH is still low but have not gotten the T3 back yet (of course the most important one)  So I will hopefully have that Monday. She said IF that is elevated they will put me on PTU or Methimazle???  Research these a bit but not much time today. Does anyone have any experience with these drugs?

I'm a tad  worried because  I did read they can raise Liver enzymes. Mine have been good (since giving up the Japanese "immune building mushrooms" woooops... who knew!!?? ;)  I don't think I shared that blunder...I was away..I  thought they would help my immune system in a "natural" way...my doc's head did almost pop off lol,  and you will love this NYG...he said I suppose you heard about them on line!!!  LOL  As soon as I stopped taking them my levels went down again. Ah well you try to be organic and it bites you in the.....  Liver!

Considering I am considered UND at the moment, should I be concerned these Thyroid drugs could effect my SVR chances?   Any nasty side effects?

Oh it's such a beautiful Friday night  here in the east...I wish we all could be talking about the lovely day we all had and the millions of stars in the picture perfect  sky tonight! Instead of SVR  PTU's  TSH's.... T4,  VL's     sigh....  "There's always tomorrow for dreams to come true"....  don't worry I wont make this a wave, and make you hear me sing!
A star on the forhead for whoever names the movie that song is from!
(well sort of a movie.... oh...  there's a clue)  ;)   another clue... It is a very inspirational master piece of cinematography........  filmed at the north pole   ;)

And to all a goodnight !!!

My thyroid went wockety (hypo) very late in tx, at about week 42. Since starting the meds 8 weeks ago or so, we've adjusted the dose twice.   Any chance it will sort itself out now that I've finished tx?

My TSH was low though. 0.5 whatever that means?

The TSH is the number that they generally monitor the most closely.  Mine was 0.0 one week and three weeks later was 6.2.  From hyper to hypo.  So typical. Now that I'm on synthroid it's at 0.63 and from what I'm reading on my latest report the normal levels are .4 to 6.0 so you are on the high end at .5 but not out of range completely.

Hopefully you can wait fora while and see what goes on and if it rebounds because it's not that bad and is questionable for certain.

Thanks for the info gang...   coincidentaly my doc just called...sometimes he can drive me crazy! Sometimes I love 'em.  At first he said my 3T4 level is normal, so he is not sure what is going on till the Endo looks at the labs. (Then after bantering with me about symptoms) he said it was right in the middle 1.7- .5 something like that??  My TSH was low though. 0.5 whatever that means?

He kept asking about symptoms and said if I had it, I would not be fatigued, well how the Heck can anyone not be fatigued on these drugs!!?? A week a go a I climbed a mountain...he did not seem to think that "over active" ( I am begining to wonder about him!) any way we shall see.... He said the labs could be wrong.  He acted as if he just refused to believe I have it, because I don't have all the really bad symptoms...no sorry my eyes are not popping out of my head like a guppy... yet!
But I am having shakes and my legs feel like they are going to fall off...and I am waaaayyyyy overly anxious and cranky... isn't that enough to think maybe there is something going on. I certainly hope not but his attitude about it is just odd.

I swear my hat... heck my everything LOL goes off to all of you who have put up with this for as long as you have. I am so new and already on the medical roller coaster of H***!  MY NP who is more grounded and whom I get along with like a sister needs an operation and will be taking 6 months off...I am devastated about this because she is my rock compared to his sometimes arrogant  " I've been a doctor for 20 years, I know what I am talking about." I am going to miss her terribly! :(

I tried to write you too Rita!!! :( They say you are blocked???? I looked and don't see anything blocked?? Any ideas?  I tried to send you notes and a message all blocked!!??

Some others I tried to write were blocked as well....  ok what's up... a conspiracy???  ;)

PS Find a hemotologist who understands about treatment and hemoglobin levels and see if THEY will write you the script for procrit.

Do NOT dose reduce unless it is absolutely positively necessary or it DOES risk your chances of SVR.  First seek out anything else you can do and attempt that.  Let your doctor know that you have a support group that you belong to (but for God's sake don't say on the internet or their head will pop off, take it from me (although my GI learned in the long run just how valuable this forum really is) and it's VERY common when hemo gets under ten for hcv patients to be given procrit to assist their levels as it IS a chemotheraphy!

Sorry somehow hit send........

Anyway, get yourself an endo doc and discuss the situation with them - starting with your nuke imaging scan to make sure what is going on.  Chances are you'll flip over to hypo and just need to take synthroid. Graves is more dangerous and usually requires the thyroid to be removed. Then you take Synthroid every day as well.

The synthetic hormone completely regulates the amount that is in your body so generally you're just fine and don't really notice anything whatsoever.

Interferon and it's autoimmune diseases can really be a pain however - so can end stage liver disease.  I'd rather have treated and be stuck with a bum thyroid than not having treated and end up with liver cancer.

It's just a matter of perspective.

Good luck.

I was diagnosed at week 24 hyperthyroid - had to wait three weeks for my nucleaur imaging scan. It turned out I was now hypothyroid.  This is TYPICALLY what happens when you get a thyroid problem via the INF.

I take the endocronologist ordered synthroid once a day every day.  I will for the rest of my life.  I get my numbers checked periodically to see if the dose should change and basically that's it.

It's not that big a deal

Wow sounds more complicated than I thought! I read up on Graves... but isn't this all from the Meds?  Isn't Graves something inherited or acquired? I should have my labs back by weeks end. Will let you know what they say.  My NP told me my doc always checks thyroid...said many docs don't, but mine is quite thorough...it was caught on  routine weekly lab work...no real symptoms, except my legs feel like they will fall off!

I thought we started together Trish, I guess I am getting you mixed up with someone else... Gee that never happens with brain fog ey?  True I took shot 8 last night.
So glad the meds kicked in fast for and you are feeling better!  I hope I am as lucky,
the last thing I need is another specialist to see and more meds in my belly! :(

Thanks for the good info medicmommy, your name suits you well!! :) Love the Mantra as well!  Guess we 3 were the unlucky ones out of the "rarely seen" conditions! Hmmm  ;)
I wonder???
