Milk thistle

Does anybody here grow their own milkthistle. I have just ordered 3 kilos of seeds, but haven't discovered yet how to harvest the essential ingredients. Would appreciate any advice or links on the subject. My computer use is restricted at present.  I think we are getting Texas' rain here as it has rained non-stop for 4 days which always disrupts power supply. Why? Well because the coal at the power plant is kept out in the open and when it's wet it doesn't burn so well, so there is less electricity generated. Unbelievable but true.

"From what i have read milk thistle is poorly absorbed in the gut.  So even if you grow a lot of it the issue of getting it into your system is a hurdle."

Yeah I have discovered that too, but I have been assured that if I grind the seeds and take them along with flax seed then  there will be enough fat to carry the silymarin into the blood. There is still some doubt as to the efficacy of it anyway, but at least I can do this cheaply where I am, and I may get some placebo effect even if the chemicals aren't doing much.
If I get adventurous I can make a tincture from the plant and use that. Part of it is to keep the feeling that I am doing something about the problem :)

From what i have read milk thistle is poorly absorbed in the gut.  So even if you grow a lot of it the issue of getting it into your system is a hurdle.  The more expensive brands process it in some way to increase absorption, or so they advertise.

One also notes that some of the most interesting response and benefit using MT involved intravenous use with pharm grade MT and infusion; probably beyond what most of us can accomplish safely.  : )

The quarters fit in the slot better than the Bennies.

Jillybean must live near me somewhere as I was about to say the same thing! The blasted stuff takes over whole pastures! Murariji, you may want to check out Sho-Saiko-to. It is a Japanese Hep C treatment that includes milk thistle and a blend of other stuff. I used it for 7 months prior to treating and my liver enzymes dropped into normal ranges. I bought mine from HepZone -a company in the USA for about $40/month. -You'd probably find the same thing less expensive on your side of the Pacific. Good luck!~MM

hmmm...where I live it's a weed and not a nice one at that.  If I had more time, I'd be happy to harvest what ever you needed! lol

Thanks that's all helpful. I discovered that the sylibin has to be removed through soaking in alcohol and the whole process seems beyond me, but all parts of the plant are edible. But it's going to be a bit hit and miss to get the amounts right. From what I've read silymarin in small doses does practically nothing, only in larger doses did it appear to be beneficial.  I was considering feeding my cows and seeing if drinking their milk helped so the information that it is toxic for livestock has probably  saved me a whole world of grief.

No but I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night..............and I Googled.

NNUAL/PERRENIAL PLANT:
Annual or biennial (Takes 2 years to complete the growth cycle)

PARTS USED:
Seeds, leaves and roots.

SOIL REQUIREMENTS:
Does well in most types of soils, especially fertile pastures that have been overgrazed and poorly managed.

SUN REQUIREMENTS:
Milk thistles prefer sunny or lightly shaded areas.

GROWING ZONES:
USDA growing zones 5-9

PLANTING TIME:
Sow seeds at a depth of 3mm in early summer or just after the last frost of spring.

POLLINATION:
Milk thistle reproduces by its own seed.

FLOWERING/SEEDING TIME:
From seed, milk thistle will take around three weeks to germinate.

HARVESTING:
Cut off flower heads when white pappus tuft begins to develop as the flower dries at the end of the growing season. Seeds can be harvested for a few weeks.

DRYING METHODS / YIELD:
Let the cut flower heads dry in a sunny, warm place for 5 to 7 days or in a brown paper bag in a dry, warm place. After dried, place in a burlap sack and chop at the flower heads to remove seeds. Winnow the seeds in the open air, or using a fan.

PLANT YIELD:
Each milk thistle flower can produce about 190 seeds, with an average of 6,350 seeds per plant, with over 90% being viable for growth and use. It is the seeds that are most often used for medicinal purposes. Approximately 1 /4 pound of seed will be yielded per plant.

PRESERVATION / PACKAGING METHODS:
Can be dried and stored as any herb or spice in an air-tight container.

ESSENTIAL OIL USE:
Used as a liver tonic.

PLANT CHEMICALS:
Silybin is the main chemical agent in milk thistle responsible for its medicinal effects (about 60% of silymarin).

IS THIS AN EDIBLE PLANT:
Yes, almost all parts of the plant, including roots, young shoots, the spiny bracts on the flower head, the stems and the leaves can be eaten.

CAUTIONS / CONTRAINDICATIONS:
Considered toxic to livestock. Avoid using if you are pregnant or breast-feeding.

DRUG INTERACTIONSs:
May interfere with antipsychotics, seizure medications, halothane, allergy drugs, drugs for high cholesterol, anti-anxiety drugs, antiplatelet and anticoagulant drugs, as well as some cancer drugs. Consult your healthcare provider before taking milk thistle.
