Organ Transplants In Other Countries

Some people are talking about going to different countries like China, India, Philippines, Singapore and others to get a liver or other organ transplant. This, since there is little wait time usually and a much less expensive amount for the surgery and hospital stay. I don’t know if I would trust my life going to a foreign country which most likely don’t like Americans to begin with, and the health system’s quality control is questionable at best.

Then you have this guy from India who for more secure health reasons wanted to have a transplant here but didn’t have enough money. So he decided to hide a monkey on the endangered species list in his pants, knowing some American would pay a lot of money for it.

Yes, he flew into NY and stuffed the monkey down his pants thinking no one would notice. Naturally the customs inspectors found it and confiscated it. In my opinion this guy was very lucky having stuffed that monkey in his pants, because monkeys have very poor eye sight and love bananas.

My followup care was all done in San Francisco.I had one not uncommon complication within the first few months post tp~ my bile duct got clogged and needed three ERCPs. Now, I do have insurance that covers my doc visits and regular blood work.

There is NO WAY, I'd go back to Taiwan for medical work, Thailand, yes, but not Taiwan.
However the surgery was top notch it was everything else that was lacking and we were not adequately prepared. They gave us a list of things for the ICU that wasn't correct, Another example, there, the family feeds the patient. So my husband had to go to the market, prepare food for me and bring it to the hospital. That is normal there. If we'd known before hand I wouldn't have had to call my sister from the hospital and ask her to get a flight to assist us. It's a long crazy story and if I ever find a co-writer, maybe it'll get written and published.

By contrast, the night I spent in a hospital in Bangkok was delightful, as a hospital stay could be. I could even order yummy Thai food delivered in.

What about insurance now? What if God forbid something were to happen to you, like complications. Would you go back to Taiwan?
Do you fly back for yearly check-ups? Just curious. I actually own a scooter made in Taiwan, a Kymko People 250. If their surgery is as excellent as this scooter, you're in very good hands. Best of luck to you and a long life...

I was the first Westerner to have a transplant at Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taiwan. It was a live liver transplant with my daughter as my donor.

At the time, I didn't have insurance and although I had money in the bank, my hepatologist said they would not even do pre-testing without my having insurance.

My computer whiz son helped us find the center, which we choose due to their excellent statistics which included no donor mortalities and few complications.

The chief surgeon was trained in the US, in Pennsylvania.  My surgery was complicated and experimental as my portal vein was entirely occluded.
The surgery was top rate. The after care, however, was very difficult, and archaic by our standards. The price was a fraction of what it would have been in the US. I feel I had the best surgery for my situation but it was not easy doing it so far from home. Over 5 years later I can say I have no regrets:)

I see the humor in your story but do want you to know there is a very respectable member on this forum who did go to another country and get a transplant.  Yes they were American.   The transplant was very successful and saved thier life.   I'm not saying we should all go run off to get medications and operations in other countries but do know it happens everyday.   Many Americans walk over the boarders to get dental work, medications and surgeries.   I guess it's the other way that creates monkey exchanging problems.  : )

Best to you

FYI:  My sister has a great looking Mexican Grill ( teeth)  Made in Mexico.  She's been doing this for many years.  Nothing has fallen out yet.   Now my expensive American dentist could use some advice from this Mexican dentist.  High end dental work and still falls out.   Going to work three different times looking like bub bub got me to a more practical dentist.   Coming to this county for medical care is expensive and risky.   As the monkey found out.  Could have done better in a different country.
