Working Out!

I have gained about twenty pounds and feel so tired and crappy all the time.  Getting ready to hire a personal trainer to help me get motivated to work out!  I would love to hear about others that are 50 plus years and your fitness regimes!  Thanks!  I have Hep C - osteopenia - thyroid disease.

It's important if trying to lose weight to do it slowly.Try not to eat after 6:00 pm.Eat what you want in moderation but not after 6pm.Good nutrition a must.Keep hydrated. If you drink water it gives you a full feeling for awhile.A good exercise for your abdomen is to lay flat on hard surface take your feet and do your Capital's and lower case letters one at a time.Stretch before you do anything and take it slow.Once you can go all the way through your alphabet, you'll be surprized at how tight your abs and butt feel.Once you get there then add rolling over on tummy, streching butt to feet.Push ups, just a few. You'll make up your own routine in no time. After doing it for a time your body will crave it,Wahlah. You can do it.Sitting on floor and taking knee to breast bone stretches out your lower back muscles.Just remember to stretch before and after and take it slow. This is what we do at the gym for people with arthritis and such.Water exercise is the best but if your doing something is better than nothing.I just wanted to help.
Good Luck,
Tammy

On days when I'm too winded to walk far, I am doing a knock-off of Tai Chi to keep my muscles from atrophying. I do Tai Chi, and drink Chai Tea!  (say that fast 3 times) No, but it is easy on the bod, and keeps me motivated to do SOMETHING physical!  I never did Yoga but I hear that is good to do as well, if you're hemoglobin challenged.

I like your attitude. My body always wants to lay down but when I push past that feeling I am usually able to cope just fine. I do limit my activities after work and try not to get stuck in a position where I wish I wasn't there. Like in the sun or large crowds for long periods of time.
I am also interested in how I will feel post TX?
I am trying to plan next summers vacation, like a carrot on a stick, but I am uncertain of what I will feel like.

I'm male, 58 years old.  I've been in treatment for 18 weeks out of a total 24 (6 to go, yea!) and undetectable since around week 12.

I've lost about 12 pounds since starting, and have gross fatigue at all times, but I found that I feel tired regardless of WHAT I do.  Lay on the couch = fatigue.  Take my dog for a long walk = fatigue.  Dig up the garden and plant vegetables = fatigue.  Long snooze in the afternoon = fatigue.

My solution to tiredness and other side effects is to put the idea of them way to the back of my mind.  So on one level I know I'm tired and itchy and so on, but up front I'm just the same as I always was.  Kind of like an old enemy who's learned not to mess with me directly.

I'm interested to see what will happen after the last shot, and how long it takes to recover, but right now I'm in a pretty good place considering.

Tx made me lose 15 lbs, which was great, but 6 of those lbs were muscle.  When I finished (SVR, hurray!) I began a very slowly progressing program of exercise.  I started with 1 set each (10 reps) of 4 just exercises: chest press, pull down, leg press and crunches, followed by 5 minutes on the treadmill at 3 mph.

Every other day I went to the gym and increased my treadmill time by 1 minute, if at all - until I got to 20 minutes.  Then I played with elevating the ramp and increasing the speed in intervals.  I also added sets and weights until I got to 3 sets of each of those four exercises, with enough weight to be tired on the last rep.  Then I added more exercises.  Now I'm back to where I was.  It took about 6 months to get there.

If you can afford it, I highly recommend working with a trainer - at least when you begin.  If not, there are many good books and web sites that offer exercise programs.  Best of luck to you.

I lost 18lb.s in the beginning. Now, I have no problem eating, and I'm gaining fst all of a sudden, but of course no energy to work off the calories. I walk as much as can, sometimes only frm the bed to the bathroom an back. ladybug, I agree with you, it would be good to be able to do this as a group. Why don't you guys move to Vancouver, it's nice here. Rains alot, but very pretty.

Oh I'm definitely in the over 50 group and my fitness regime is simple.
Walking!
I walk to the couch, I walk to the bathroom and I walk to the refrigerator several times a day. I used to walk out to the porch to smoke but I have substituted that trip by more walks to the kitchen. I'm pathetic!
I didn't lose much on tx, maybe 5-7 lbs, but I gained that back and another 10 or 12.
Yuck!
I wish there were some way we could do this as a group, it's always easier to exercise with a friend.

I gained (cringe) between 45 - 55 lbs on treatment.  I have 25 more lbs to lose.  It was sure a lot easier gaining it, but I'll get there.

I too was hoping to loose wt. on TX! I have gained 25#'s because I can no longer run, do Pilates or Zumba due to the Anemia. I tried to keep it up but almost passed out on a run and the walk to the Pilates class was to tiring? I feel horrible. I hate my wt.(lots of cellulite) from quick wt gain. I am uncomfortable in my own skin due to Riba rash and the food that feels the best in my mouth is soft serve. So now my previously fit body has turned into soft serve. I have no initiative or energy. Cranky and tired. I don't like hanging out with myself. I truly get on my own nerves! Yet every time I turn around there I am. I have even read that when you get off of TX you are ravenous. I hope I will be able to run again.

Funny you should ask this question. I am struggling myself. I am one of the lucky ones you so far (shot 12 tonight) that has not suffered with sx but I do feel so wiped out in the afternoons and by the time I get off work and get home I do not feel like doing anything. I had hoped (know that sounds sick) that I would lose weight on tx but Oh no not me, not so lucky... if anything have gained. *****.... I am not sure what to do but to look toward Dec. when I will be finished with tx and have energy..

I agree with the goal sitting... even something as small as walking around the block everyday.

Would love to hear how everyone has handled that on tx

I work out regularly with weights 4 times a week. I have been doing this for about 8 years. I finished treatment 6 months ago. You need to find a routine that you will stick with. Whatever it is. Some people like to take excercise classes. Others like running and some like myself like the weights.

Try different things until you find something you can stick to. I stick to it because I set goals for myself. My first goal was to bench press 200 lbs, then 250, then 300. Over time I have achieved this. The important thing is to try different things until you find what you like. Some people can't do this. but it doesn't hurt to try.

Good luck

I have been doing the exact same thing!!  I will get back to you in about two or three weeks to let you know if it helped.  It is a personal trainer through the YMCA so much cheaper than most personal trainers.   I have high hopes!!  I still want to hear if anyone else had a workout routine though.

Yeah I gainned 20 from the thyroid disease myself. Lazy and crappy all the time.

I started to work out then stopped. I started to work out then stopped. It's hard it's like when you feel good about yourself you wANT to work out but when you feel like this all bloated and yuck it's so hard to get going.

I can relate to you SO much.

As a matter of fact as I sit here holding in my stomach at my desk I keep thinking "well I should go out walking at lunchtime" but instead..............sit here typing away cause I don't want to.

You let me know that you did it and it worked and I am a baby so you can goad me into doing it myself, please ana!
