failing at finding a job/ internship or at least volunteer over the summer

so summer is finally here after a strenuous semester of school and final exams, and 48 weeks of tx!  last riba friday morning.  but like the procrastinator i've been, i never really bothered to apply for any internships during Spring Break in March, partly because i was lazy, and partly because i wasn't sure how well i would guarantee my performance since i wasn't sure how worse my side effects would get towards the end of treatment.  so now, i'm stuck at home, trying to find a job, or internship, or at least volunteer opportunities before my junior year in college swings around in August.  By now, internships are out of the question seeing that most deadlines passed in March, even most volunteering opportunities in laboratories, research facilities, and hospitals.

thinking medical school after college, but who would want me if i have no job/ internship experience?  but i do have experiences as a patient, and i want to share that experience with people, like be an advocate of some sort, but i don't know where to start.  i want to be involved in something, build a background for what i am, and communicate with people, or at least contribute to research to find cures for something, shadow a doctor.

once school starts, i don't want to have the burden of being a full time student AND having to deal with an internship AND preparing for medical school exams.

what do i do?  please someone give me some suggestions, i really want to work, or volunteer and gain experience while being able to share my experience.  and maybe even possibly have someone to write me good recommendations willingly when i apply to medical school.

sitting at home is just a waste of what possible goods i could do for others.

Another great place to volunteer at is a Nursing Home.  They usually have an open door policy with volunteers.  I was a recreation therapy volunteer.  i would bring patient down to watch a movie... would take time being they were all in wheel chairs...  help them pay in-house bingo... sit and just talk with them one on one (can learn a lot from an elderly person), and other miscelaneous things.

I remember how I walked into this thread late and you already had an internship lined up. Now that you interrupted it because of your emergency one week hospitalization post-tx, I'm wondering how you're juggling your health with your keen desire to participate as an intern.

I think Winner's original advice above is sterling: "one thing at a time ! things will fall into place... keep upbeat , if you can .  look at what you just acomplished."

Thinking of you.

Hey, gal. This morning is your last riba and official EOT!!  "By a long journey we know a horse's strength; so length of days shows a person's heart."

Well, I kind of missed this thread and walked in only after the problem had been resolved and you had an offer on the table. So what can I say except, ''cool". Go for it and you'll iron out the kinks, in terms of your privacy issues. I think it's better than taking the summer off, which could put you into a mental rut.

CONGRATS on today's last riba. Are you getting an EOT PCR today?

Another thought is perhaps taking a semester off either during a right after college. That would give you a real opportunity for volunteer and/or intern work without putting yourself under the pressure of having to deal with everything at once. It had to be a very difficult year with school and treatment. Sometimes you just got to give yourself a little break.

Just be upfront with whoever interviews you. Indeed, they may prefer you make a first-person presentation. But if that's not what you want, simply say it. No reason to be defensive or apologetic. It's a rational and understandable position to take. After all, your're premed student, volunteering your time, it's not like they're probably going to pay you anything. Sounds like a good deal all around.

thanks so much for your suggestions all!
guess what!  i just got an email back from one of the largest liver organizations here!  i simply just said in my email that i wanted to share what i've learned as a former patient who treated and was going to school at the same time.  they said they wanted to interview me and see if they can give me an internship or volunteer opportunity!  yay something i'll actually be interested in doing this summer, might make me an advocate!  ok, but here's the thing, if they want me to talk about my old experience as a treated patient, i don't want to put it in first person since i don't want people to know i've had it and i don't want to accidentally meet someone i know as a patient, that would be awkward, so what do i tell them during the interview about my privacy matters?

most likely not get paid, but at least it's something i'll love doing for about 2 months in the summer, and if i can help others whenever i get access to a computer, then yep it's a good deal for me!

cool thing is, this organization is also conducting clinical trials so i can learn something new!

I'm sorry LA my daughter is almsot 21 and my son is almost 19 and both of them are having a helluva time finding any work too.  Especially my daughter she gets SO depressed about it but I try and remind her that these are extraordinary times.....it's not you personally you know and with everything you have been undergoing the fact is that you DO have a fulltime job right now and that is getting better.

Believe me, you have the WHOLE of your long lovely life to work. If you could volunteer just a couple of hours every few days you might find it really rewarding AND not too taxing.  You don't want to have a setback - your health IS your priority.

Well I tried to tell my own daughter to volunteer but she'd rather volunteer and stare at facebook all day long........so if you'd rather not just understand we are only brainstorming to try and think of something you can do ;)

Here's the website.  Enter your zipcode and it will find relays near you.  The whole medical community comes out for this event so you can meet lots of people who may have a need for you this summer.  Also, the relay is a great event.  I walk a survivor lap each year, and it does something good for me!

I don't remember where you live, but if you leave near a medical center that treats a lot of people with Hep C and, if you are interested, you could inquire about being a Hep C patient advocate.  I think I recall that someone else on here was actually contacted by their doctor's office with a job offer as such.

Who better than a medical student who has been through Hep C treatment?

why not volunteer at a local hospital?  This way you could see first hand what the docs have to deal with and it will look good on your resume.

I am glad to hear that you are near the end of your treatment.  Good luck with all

I'm not sure where you live, but most areas have a women's center with plenty of volunteering opportunities.  Many women's centers have relationships with domestic violence shelters, another place that is crying for volunteers.

Meanwhile, try charity work.  Relay for Life season is upon us, you might find a team and walk a relay if you feel up to it.  That's a great place to network, because of the many groups that form teams and participate.

The website will find relays in your area and then each will have its own website.  I'll find the link and post it.

I think its great that you are getting out and about.  Don't beat yourself up about putting it off to last minute.  This last year you have done 2 full time jobs, simultaneously - school and treatment.  You have a lot to be proud of and you will have SVR to show for it.
