A little bit confused

Okay so I've recently been diagnosed with genital herpes.  I'm pretty sure I must have gotten it via oral sex, even though my boyfriend doesn't ever get cold sores i understand the virus can still be present and transmitted in the absence of symptoms.  So does this mean my type of herpes is more likely to be HSV1 as this is the type found in the mouth? Additionally, if this means my boyfriend has oral herpes anyway, does this mean there is no risk of further oral sex with him as he cant be reinfected with the same virus?

hope that makes sense?

yes testing is necessary! A visual diagnosis of herpes is wrong 1/3 of the time in even the most experienced providers who see herpes regularly. Also you need to know what type you and your partner have so that you can make educated decisions about what precautions to take together.

At this point both you and your partner can seek out type specific herpes igg blood tests and depending on the results, depends on what future testing you'll need to confirm your infection.
