The herpes handbook can be found at

http://westoverheights.com/genital_herpes/handbook/view_the_chapters.html

1.  The answer is its real.  It does happen.  Genital HSV-1 sheds less than Genital HSV-2.  Genital HSV-1 sheds about 3-5% of days a year.  Oral HSV-1 sheds more.  When talking about transmission some people go years before having transmission to their partner.  For example we had a regular poster here who said it took 5 years of a very active oral sex life for her BF to transmit his oral herpes to her genitals.

2.  For most STD's yes.  When it comes to herpes it only reduces risk about 30%.  Because you have to remember the virus is transmitted skin-to-skin contact with heat and friction.  Lots of area exposed to heat and friction during sex that your condom doesn't protect.

3.  HSV-1 was really not well studied for valtrex.  Genitial HSV-2 was what all the studies were done for.  I don't think it is that effective for HSV-1.  I am sure grace can clearify.

4.  Most likely not.  If the drug doesn't do well they won't make it.

1.  Not many people can make an outbreak happen.  The only thing that will cure outbreaks is letting them heal.  The surpressive medicine will shorten some of the outbreak time but there is no way to kill the virus off the skin.

2.  I think grace may know some tricks.  But that handbook has some info too on that subject.

3.  The virus is in a completely different type.  It is in the same family but nothing really is the same about the virus.  Herpes Simplex is different thank just Herpes Zoster.  They have been working for a vaccine for ages.

Hi! Does anyone have experience with any of the 4 so called vaccines in the market ? None of them claim to kill the virus, just suggest that it helps your body fight better and faster.

Skinner vaccine http://www.vri.org.uk,
Lupidon www.lupidon.info
the so called Bulgarian vaccine http://www.sofia-derm-clinic.org
And the new Russian vaccine, Vitaherpavac.

just search pubmed  there are articles, but they all end with- "the results are encouraging and further clinical studies are required"   If you open the pages in google chrome, there is the option to autotranslate.

also there is a plant based medicine called www.panavir.ru

I am planning to visit Russia and will more to happy to share what happens after ti have  completed the Vitaherpavac course- it costs $300 for the consultation, one shot and for the balance vaccine that you can carry home.

Now I can not be the only person to have figure this out, so is there anyone else?

I guess you are right. been at this all day. Skinner's vaccine was rejected by the various pharmaceutical companies that ran trials back in the 1980s.  from their web site it looks like the CEO quit and there are some new investors.  Lupidon too was rejected back then.

Humm, so back to Sq one.

Saw some  good news from Chimerix and AiCuris though

There is no vaccine or cure for herpes.

As to dating sites, I always use the mainstream ones. We're not lepers! Most adults have HSV1 and 20-25% have HSV2. And, most people are willing to look beyond herpes, at least from my experience. Herpes is what you tell yourself it is, I never buy into the stigma.

Got most of the info from this article written by someone at Brown University

http://www.brown.edu/Courses/Bio_160/Projects2000/Herpes/HSV/vaccines.html

also from an earlier post..regarding anti-viral lip balm.. i got some from Duane Reade there were several.  Also, there are NO clinical trials, but one can visit  www.hva.org.uk (which is an official site)  they actually sell a few that they have found to have helped people in the UK.

Sorry but this has totally screwed up my life ...the dating sites are not that great.. the issue is social perception.. someone should make a movie on this kind of like what Tom Hanks did to make AIDS more acceptable

Grace, his last test was two months after sex. So I guess it would be ok for him to get tested again, no? Just making sure I understood it.

Besides, he had a partner HSV2+ and symptoms.

the vast majority of folks test accurately at the 6 month post encounter mark. 5 months it's the majority too and really no reason for any further testing to be honest.

Hi!  What is the outer range of time that it would take for HSv2 antibodies to form given that I have had HSv1 for 10 + years.

My exposure was in early October 2010 and till 11th Jan January i tested -Ve for HSV2.  Just wanted to rule out HSV2.

no antiviral lip balms that I'm aware of.

using mouthwash before kissing really isn't anything that would help either.

condoms for oral sex are highly recommended to protect you and your partner!

you'll need to talk to your partner. you'll need to find out her status. You can't make educated decisions about what precautions to take until you know who has what.

swallowing has nothing to do with risk either.

Hi!  when one has HSV it is hard not to come back to this site again and again.

So many people have the same questions.

Well, I recently tarted dating someone and am concerned/ confused how to bring up the HSV topic so early in the relationship.  I have oral HSV1 and suspected Genital HSV1

At this stage, i am assuming that she does not have HSV or any other STD. If she performs oral sex on me (when i have no visible symtons)  there is a change of 3% of viral shedding to take place and for her to catch/ get HSv1 from me.

I am being very careful while kissing and using tons of mouthwash, anti viral lip balm etc.  However, it would be very strange to use a condom for oral sex.

So I would really like an opinion.   I do not intend to perform any oral sex, however suppose she wants and assuming that is one of those unfortunate 10 days of the year when i am shedding

Would she get HSv1 orally as in get in on her lips/ mouth since that was her body part that touched my genital area  or would this HSV1 assuming i ejaculate she swallows somehow get in to her system and effect her genital area?

Many thanks in advance.

Does  hSv1 infect eyelids?

I did it again- 4 days ago, i cut my lower lip while shaving and the next day, the lip started to swell and tingle, so as a precaution, I started taking 500 g of valcyclovir daily and applied acyclovir cream to that area.

My lip has no swelling now and a scab has formed on the cut. However, this morning, my lower eyelid started getting itchy, my eye was watery and the skin under / at the end of 3 eyelashes on the lower eyelid was tender and the lower eyelid is a bit swollen.

The same pattern (cold sore followed by eye lid selling once the lip had healed) had occurred last time i had a cold sore outbreak (last summer).  I had used a ciploxin eye cream and drops and it went away in 2 days.

I started using Ciploxin drops again this morning and its already feeling better.

However, the bigger question is- can this be caused by HSv1.  If yes,  then how do i find out and am i following the right treatment?  i was told i can develop resistance to ciploxin

If i got a blister with no scab or pus on my penis a few days after receiving oral sex which did get a bit rough.

If it was not my oral HSV getting activated down below, i can only see that as a new infection unless something bacterial could cause that - i have had 3 blood tests since nov and nothing else came up.

Since there is very little research on genital HSv1,  it will go with the thought that this is one of the rare cases of genital and oral HSv1.

Given that..

1. is there any medicine that works for Genital (on penis) HSv1 for suppressive therapy
2. Are there any studies on Shedding for HSv 1 on penis for men

Grace,

My original post in November was under "does seamen spread herpes"

I was with a Girl end Oct- we did not have intercourse, but did have oral sex and i did ejaculate in her mouth.   A few days later, i noticed a leison/ ulcer on my penis.  which my doc (4th Nov) thought was herpes with some bacterial infection on top. .

Around 12th Nov, she also complained of vaginal issues and after a exam, my doc  thought she had Herpes as well.

While i had tested IgG +ve for herpes, she tested equivocal.  i had no guarantee who else she had been with.

As per your advise, i went for type specific testing and tested positve for HSv1(i have had a history of cold sores).   I then insisted she go to her gyne and we both got a series of test done.

The results were that she had a yeast infection and was positive for for HSV2.  I tested positive as earlier for HSV1.  These tests were repeated with the same results.

this was a bit of relief for me and it seems that she picked it up form somewhere else, but was just using me to pay for her various expenses.

Anyway.. i am just trying to figure out what caused my lesion.

ok I have to ask - why did you see a gynecologist if you are male?  I was rereading this whole post from the beginning and just assumed you  had picked the wrong gender until you mentioned later on you have a penis.

yeast and many other things can cause symptoms too.

i did that.. working around the billing  issues.  the only open question is-  what else can cause blisters/ lesions that
1. are little bumps in the skin
2. do not have any pus
3. do not scab

is there any kind of yeast infection that can give similar results

other testes included Syphilis, HIV, urine and semen culture and a full blood torch that showed Antibodies for Rubella and CVG.

As and when i have symptoms ( i hope i never get them again).  i round your handbook very useful, but there is limited information on Genital HSv1, except that

1. Sheding is 1% to 3%
2. According to CDC 50% of people will not have a genital HSV reccurance and 40% will only have one
3. There is no study to show effectiveness of suppressive therapy
4.  I am not to sure what dosage should be for recurrence.

I will get a swab culture done when i have an episode- any other test you would recommend?

Teri,

I have a background in medical research and this infection has become a research topic for me.  I have reached out to a number of people in search of answers.

I swapped several emails with several researchers, including Dr. Wald and she was kind enough to reply to a deluge of questions from me.

As I had mentioned, my past has included what i know now was cold sores (3 outbreaks in 5 years) twice when i cut my lip, one after i had very chapped lips on a beach holiday.

I noticed legions on my penis shaft 10 days after oral sex (Nov 2nd).  this girl laster tested positive got HSV 2 and had a yeast infection.

I went to my urologist who sent me to a ex army Dermatoligist and veneralogist-  he said it was classic herpes.  He put me on valcyclovir 500 three times a day for 10 day when he met me-Nov 7th the legions appeared to be healing. My results in a combined test were IgG 2.8 where +ve and IgM was equivocal. His analysis was that the results justified his theory of herpes. I also put on Azithrall 1 gm daily.

I do not have pictures, but I had no tingling or burning, just 3 small lesions/ blisters in an area of 1 cm which had a whitish top.. no scab formed and they went away in 8 days. I was also advised to clean the area with anti bacterial soap and while doing so vigouously, one of the blisters broke and bled.

Subsequently i got the type  specific test done. which was HSv1 positive.  To be sure, i repeated it 4 weeks later.

If it was not HSv1, then what could it be?

After exploring various medical options, i am trying homeopathic medicine to improve my immunity.

Can we take this offline?  i would like to send you my reports and am happy to pay for consult.

One cannot determine from an antibody test WHERE the infection is.  I am also very surprised that Anna would take a guess at the location of your infection without a swab test to prove that.  Your symptoms sound like they could be herpes, but very hard to know without a swab test.  Your long standing infection - can you describe it?
