Acyclovir

I stopped taking acyclovir in December 2011. I have had numerous outbreaks like once a month or every couple of months. I have had HSV2 four years and four months now. My last outbreak was maybe eight weeks ago. Shouldn't my outbreaks decrease since I have had the virus for some time.I would like to know is that too many outbreaks to be experiencing.

when you stopped being on suppressive therapy, you stopped keeping the virus under control. you will always have more ob's off suppressive therapy than on it.

it's more about your genes as to how often you get recurrences than anything you are doing as far as diet, stress reduction and exercise. Eating healthy , exercising and keeping stress low are always a good idea but honestly they have little to do with how often you get recurrences :(

no reason to stop eating chocolate!! It won't decrease your ob's and if you are anything like me, you eating chocolate is some days what keeps you from stabbing people....he he he

we don't recommend lysine since it's relatively ineffective for most people who use it. we also don't have shedding studies for folks who are in discordant relationships and are trying to reduce transmission to a partner.

Hi grace long time since I spoke with you. I have been taking Lysine for outbreaks since April 2013 and my outbreaks seem to be under control. I decided to give it a try because it's natural as opposed to acyclovir also I want to see how my body responds to it. So far things seems to be fine although I have been only taking it for two months. Grace have you ever taken it or know someone who has and what has the outcome been for them.

L-lysine is VERY effective, I've been using it for years.  You need more l-lysine with Vit C, like 3000-4000 mg every 3 or 4 hours on a full stomach. (If you're having an outbreak or about to have one) if you're just trying to suppress it take about 1000 mg per day. & then after a month or two, you can give your body a break for a few days or a week. Also you can't take it with milk or it's ineffective. Also, no coffee because it makes it easy for your body to absorb l-arginine. (Also no nuts) What I'm unsure of is about taking both acyclovir & l-lysine together. It might interfere with the acyclovir.

I appreciate your advice you have been very patient and thorough with me for some time. I understand what you are saying about when you stop the medication but I still think that other things can keep it under control being that I have had the virus for such a long time. I never tried the Lysine I think I should give a shot have you ever tried the L lysine for genital herrpes outbreaks.

I am not on suppressive therapy could this be the reason why I have so many outbreaks.

the vast majority of people with genital herpes, don't have food triggers.

been seen every time you have symptoms to confirm that it's all herpes going on. also get tested for yeast and bacterial infections vaginally too.

unfortunately time doesn't make people have significantly less recurrences either for the most part.   One study showed that after 5 years of being infected, 1/4 of folks had the more ob's, 1/4 had less ob's and the rest all had about the same number of recurrences.   Things like bv especially in us gals can trigger herpes to be more active and many things can mimic herpes ob's too.  Having 3 ob's in a month is a reason to start looking to find out what all is going on down yonder.

Grace I would like to know if caffeine is a trigger to a herpes outbreak. The reason why is because I have been drinking coffee for a while I usually don't I had three outbreaks last month. However I have been off acyclovir for a 13 months. I had HSV2 for 4 years and 5 months now my OBGYN said that I shouldn't be experiencing that many outbreaks being that I have had the virus for some time she's saying that is too many outbreaks. She said I shouldn't be experiencing any maybe once a year or none at all.

well in general recurrences tend to be single lesions. they pretty much stay the same over time unfortunately.

it's totally up to you dependent on your circumstances and how tolerant you are of recurrences. Some folks think one recurrence a year is far too many and other people put up with the average 4-6/year and don't feel the need to treat them.

I haven't had an outbreak for about two months do you think that's good being off suppressive therapy for almost a year. I stopped taking suppressive therapy December 2011.

I'm the wrong person to ask about how often I get obs :(  My gene pool really sucks when it comes to hsv. I used to get 20 ob's a year on average so I went on daily suppressive therapy.  I was pretty much on it for 20 years non-stop until I recently stopped it. Last time I had stopped it to participate in a research study, I had 7 obs in 6 months. The only reason I stopped it recently is because I'm not dating anyone and am just tired of taking pills twice a day.  I've already had a recurrence within 2 months of stopping it.

I indulge in chocolate tremendously it makes me happy. I need to slow down I have just to see how my outbreaks would do but like you said it is not a trigger. Grace do you think when you worry too much that tends to bring an outbreak on and are you still on suppressive therapy. However what's the longest you have gone without getting an outbreak. For example has it been months or years just curious about how the virus affects others.

The outbreaks aren't to bothersome I just want to try and see if I can get them under control without the suppressive therapy. I wouldn't mind going back on it. But I feel that if I keep my stress level down exercise more and eat healthier maybe they will cease for a while. I used to get outbreaks every couple of weeks to once a month. Now it's like every couple of months to sometimes once a month but I was told by the doctor that I am experiencing to many outbreaks even though I am not on suppressive therapy but I guess the virus has a mind of it's own. I don't know who to trust but you have helped me out a lot grace. However I am still eating chocolate but not as much I read that chocolate is a trigger because of the arginine. Is it possible for me to keep the outbreaks under control without suppressive therapy.

unfortunately it doesn't work that way :(  One study showed that after 5 years of being infected, about half of folks had the same amount of recurrences, 1/4 had more ob's and 1/4 had less.

if they are bothersome or you have a partner to protect, why not start daily suppressive therapy?
