Blister Pain

What does the pain of a lesion feel like? Does it hurt to touch? Is it constant, or sporadic and stabbing?

Is there a difference between the pain of the prodrome and the pain of the outbreak? Are herpes lesions always painful or is this a symptom that affects only some?

Thanks!

Lesion pain can very greatly. For some it's not very painful at all and others have quite a bit of pain.

(I should mention that I am specifically interested in these question with regards to oral herpes, not genital; though I suppose all viewpoints welcome)
